Biography

The Popes were formed in 1993 by Shane MacGowan , after he was sacked from the Pogues. The band developed a blend of Irish folk and punk sometimes known as Paddy Beat. The Popes released three albums with MacGowan as well as a variety of EP's and singles. They recorded one studio album, Holloway Boulevard, one live album, Release The Beast, an EP, Are You Looking At Me?, and several singles as a solo group.

These days The Popes are a new and dangerous animal, the sound has gotten harder and yet remained melodic, Celtic and original. The Popes are a rock’n’roll band with the soul of a fiddler at the crossroads.

The line up has changed over the years, and again in the recent past, after the tragic death of formidable instrumentalist and banjo player Tom McManamon. Tom was a major contributor to the bands' unique sound, but lead vocalist and principle songwriter Paul McGuinness, aka Mad Dog, has remained throughout.

The current line up of The Popes are Paul (Mad Dog) McGuinness - Guitar and Vocals, Charlie Hoskyns - Guitars and Backing Vocals, Will Morrison - Drums and Backing Vocals, Dave Allen – Fiddle and Backing Vocals, Jim McAllister – Bass and Backing Vocals and Whiskey Mick – Mandolin and Backing Vocals.

The Popes return with their new album "New Church" which is OUT NOW – the follow up to 2009’s critically acclaimed “Outlaw Heaven”. “New Church” is the band’s strongest album to date - from punked up blitzkreig of opener “Storming Heaven” to the rousing Celtic tones of “How Many Bullets”, from the feelgood anthem that is “Alice” to the Bond theme-esque vibe of the brooding “In A Broken Dream”. The album also features as stunning guest slot from Howard Marks on “Throw Down Your Aces”. The album was produced by The Popes.
The band are an established live draw and March 2012 sees them on a full UK tour as main support to The Stranglers with festivals and further dates to follow later in the year.

Praise for previous album “Outlaw Heaven”

‘A batch of songs dripping with the need to be heard. It’s a chaotic, red-blooded mix of punk, rockabilly, Celtic and country surging to ferocious peaks’

(Uncut)

‘This is what The Waterboys would have sounded like had Mike Scott sipped from the streams of whiskey. A true rough diamond’

(The Guardian)

‘The most warm, celebratory and downright mortal LP you’ll likely to hear in 2009’

(Clash Magazine)
