| About The Pursuit Of Happiness |
|
After forming in 1986 and performing in clubs around Toronto, the real story of The Pursuit of Happiness began with the release of their independent video for I'm An Adult Now. Recorded on the cheap at Scott DeSmit's Basement Studios and filmed on even the cheaper by friend Nelu Ghiran, the clip went into rotation on MuchMusic. News of the band flowed south of the border and American record reps began appearing at their gigs. The song was pressed as an independent single and when the band could no longer keep up with the demand for the record, Warner Brothers stepped in and took over distribution. In time, TPOH signed a publishing deal with EMI and a record deal with the New York office of Chrysalis Records.
Moe's hero, Todd Rundgren, was tapped to produce the band's debut, Love Junk, which was recorded in beautiful upstate New York. The CD was released in November of 1988 and featured a re-recorded version of I'm An Adult Now, which enjoyed its second round of success in the United States and Europe. She's So Young also got considerable airplay around the world and the band had a Canadian hit with Hard To Laugh. The Pursuit Of Happiness spent the next year travelling the world both as a headliner and opening for The Eurythmics, Duran Duran and The Replacements. Love Junk was certified platinum in Canada.
The band again hooked up with Rundgren for their sophomore effort, One-Sided Story. Recorded in a record breaking ten days it was released in spring of 1990. One-Sided Story spawned the singles, Food, New Language and Two Girls In One and quickly earned gold record status in Canada. For the tour, bassist Brad Barker and singer Susan Muramets joined the group. The Pursuit of Happiness performed in Australia for the first time where Love Junk had taken some time getting across the Pacific and was just then catching fire.
When Chrysalis president, Mike Bone left the company for Mercury Records, he asked the band to make the move with him. The deal was cemented while Bone and the band watched The Scorpions perform at Canada's Wonderland. The Downward Road was recorded with veteran producer Ed Stasium in Los Angeles during the spring of 1992. Marking the sessions were a small earthquake, the Rodney King riots and grand theft auto, as the band's beloved van was swiped from the valet parking of an upscale Hollywood restaurant. The Downward Road featured singles Pressing Lips and Cigarette Dangles, which gained notoriety after being featured on MTV's Beavis and Butthead.
Where's The Bone was recorded and released on friend Aubrey Winfield's new label, Iron Music in 1995. Its exploration of media and culture made Where's The Bone something of a lyrical departure for the band. Singles from this record included Young And In Love, Kalendar and the band's whimsical tribute, Gretzky Rocks. TPOH again toured extensively in support of the record.
The Wonderful World of The Pursuit Of Happiness was recorded shortly thereafter and was presented as something of a song cycle with the hope that it would be listened to as one long piece. The new record and tour saw the addition of current vocalist Renee Suchy to the group. Singles, She's The Devil and Carmalina were released accompanied by wildly entertaining videos shot by Stephen Scott.
At the end of the tour for WW, the band embarked on an extended hiatus. Moe Berg recorded a solo record, Summer's Over. In late 1999, EMI Special Products in Los Angeles approached TPOH about issuing a best of through label Razor and Tie. Sex And Food, The Best Of The Pursuit Of Happiness was released in 2000 for the US only and featured the band's singles, fan favorites and several unreleased tracks. The summer of 2001 saw the band regroup for three shows only.
In November of 2005 EMI Music Canada will release the long awaited compilation, When We Ruled for the band's Canadian audience. For this record, the band went back into the studio for the first time in eight years. When We Ruled will include two new songs - Hey Mary Anne and the Prince tune, When Doves Cry, a song that has been a staple of the band's live show.
