This is a review from www.x2rr.com from when we played The Garage in L.A.----The first band of the night was called the Pyronauts, from Sacramento, CA. From the looks of the band, I thought I was in for some heavy metal along the lines of Slayer or early Metallica. They were all heshed out with long hair, sideburns, etc. Then they broke into some supersonic surf instrumentals. These guys are a surf band?? That is a great look to keep the judgemental scenesters off guard. I really dug their sound a lot! These guys are some seriously good surf guitar players, the bass player and the drummer were also excellent. These guys were loud! They played to a pretty empty bar and they still played with a ton of energy. You could tell these guys were going to have a good time on stage regardless of how few people showed up. Mind you, their set started about 8:30 PM on a Saturday night. They finished off their set with an absolutely rippin’ cover of Dick Dales’ “Misirlou” which you should recognize as the opening song for the movie “Pulp Fiction”. I’ve seen quite a few surf bands in my time, the thing I liked about these guys is that they didn’t fit the mold fashion-wise, but they also sped their songs up more than enough to keep things interesting. I can’t think of how many times I’ve wanted to throw up when I’ve heard bands just go through the motions when it comes to playing surf stuff. That mid tempo, jangly formula that invokes the image of yuppies sipping the coffee at sunset on the strand. These guys invoke images of someone skulking around the public restroom with a knife waiting to mug you for your surfboard while taking a shit break from the waves. Keep your Hawaiian shirts in the closet where they belong, kids, there’s a new game in town, and they’re called the Pyronauts. The last time I saw a surf band that did anything for me was the Bomboras, but these guys give me faith that surf music can be something worth hearing live.
The Pyronauts use a mix of vintage and reissue Fender gear.

The Pyronauts just killed it this weekend....the Slim's show on Friday with the Red Elvises was great and you guys were incredibily loud and powerful at the KFJC Battle of the Surfin Bands. Just a great show all the way around. See you next time
Howdy Nauts! We are trying to put together a music day bbq extravaganza raffle bikini party in at the LOP. We are trying to get a list of bands that would be interested in playing ahead of propositioning this idea to the higher power of LOP. We suspect that there will also be potato salad. If you are interested let us know, and if not I'm calling your drummer via Kowabunga Rob.
