Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were itinerant actors. His father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810. Elizabeth Hopkins Poe died in 1811, leaving three children. Edgar was taken into the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan. The remaining children were cared for by others. Poe's brother William died young and sister Rosalie become later insane. At the age of five Poe could recite passages of English poetry. Later one of his teachers in Richmond said: "While the other boys wrote mere mechanical verses, Poe wrote genuine poetry; the boy was a born poet."

About me: The Raven Lounge is the last gasping breath of fresh air in an otherwise stuffy land. Plagued by highbrow vanity clubs with low tolerance regulations, the lovers, thinkers and know-they-love drinkers of Rittenhouse Square have a bastion of individuality to call home. Tended by humble hosts, The Raven Lounge accepts all with open arms.
Our daily Happy Hours (5:30-7:30) and live music sets (8:00-10:00) have become staple events for local citizens; Center City Comedy every Thursday night (9:00-12:00) is a common favorite. The Raven also has its finger on the thriving pulse of the local dance music scene, calling claim to the city’s top DJs, spinning rock to pop, hip-hop to house, electronica to techno.
Owned and operated by a former bartender, The Raven Lounge (the proverbial golden needle in the haystack) has a mysterious vibe, wooing patrons of the street in an almost hypnotic way.
