The Readies are Detroit’s pre-eminent rock and roll band with the pedigree to prove it.
As the brainchild of Dan Kroha, known to many for his time spent in such iconic bands as the Gories and the Demolition Doll Rods, the Readies are a depth charge of high-energy, Brit Invasion, blues-indebted, bad-assery. The Readies are Kroha’s first-ever time as the sole songwriter, vocalist and guitarist and after witnessing their ferocious live performance one can only wonder “What took you so long?”
Filling the ranks are Zack Weedon, (also of the Dirtbombs) on bottom-heavy, bombastic bass and Ben Luckett, the baby-faced and wiry modern approximation of Keith Moon himself. In little over a year, the band has managed to lay waste to audiences across the United States. Did I mention these are some pretty damn handsome dudes to boot?
Kroha’s natural showmanship coupled with Weedon’s stone-faced demeanor and Luckett’s beyond-impressive flailing arms combine to make such a simple, effective unit that it’s befuddling why it doesn’t happen more often. That is, three musicians with intimate knowledge of their instruments grouped so as to be the most-classic example of the power trio.
That power trio manages to conjure up the choicest moments of yer Brit faves the Stones, Yardbirds and Animals while also being fully cognizant of the sleazy r&b of Detroit’s forgotten Fortune Records coupled with the manic energy of pre-punk of the New York Dolls and the Flamin’ Groovies.
With several 7” projects in the works and plans for tours in Europe and South America, the Readies ambition surely shows no bounds. In the immortal words of Smokey Robinson, writing for the Four Tops, get ready!
