ROCK N REEL - DAI JEFFRIES
"****"
"Thompson writes idiosyncratic lyrics and clever tunes and has such a preoccupation with death that I didn’t always believe what I heard."
"A model of clarity, smooth and uncluttered"
"A very impressive debut."
MUSIC-NEWS.COM - KWOK W WAN
"****"
"Singing like early Neil Young, he sings with the duplicity of emotional seriousness and grins to the punch line only you know."
"Blabbermouth has an easy clean sound. Each song on the album is crafted by a person living in the real world that invites everyone to explore and gives time to think on."
MUSIC MAKER - PAUL BRETT
"Clear vocals, well written. Musical arrangements compliment Blabber’s songs and use throughout of a banjo sits well in the mix."
"Good sympathetic balances and nicely produced throughout."
MARDLES - MARY HUMPHREYS
"Blabbermouth sounds rather like a modern-day Donovan, having a light effortlessy tuneful voice""He writes some very appealing tunes"
LIVING TRADITION - GREM DEVLIN
"It can be a refreshing change these days to encounter a humourous singer-songwriter whose material doesn’t shout DERIVITIVE at the listener"
NETRHYTHMS - DAVID KIDMAN
"A very attractive little pop-folk confection with a tangy centre"
"a quality of understated eeriness in the instrumental accompaniments is very effective"
"Amnesia is another satisfying Blabbermouth creation, as much for the power of the imagery as for its relative musical starkness"
AMAZON REVIEWS
1. Blabbermouth is one of those rare singers who can truly sing. the vocals are open, honest, and just beautiful. and the music honours the songs. there's nothing that doesn't need to be there. guitar, banjo, organ, percussion... all do just enough to give the songs life. it's such a relief in this age of overdone showmanship. beautiful tunes, beautifully rendered.
2. A brilliant album filled with both foot tapping rhythms and heart melting melodies. Written with spine tingling sincerity and yet punctuated with the wit and humour of an experienced professional... it's a record that deserves to be listened to and not just heard.
Blabbermouth grew up in the suburbs of a small town on the South Coast of England,
one afternoon he explored the depths of the loft and happened upon the classical guitar
he was encouraged to learn at an early age but never did.
He took it into his bedroom and began learning a few chords from a "Learn The Guitar" book.
Being a teenager he had a few things to write about, his first recording (using 2 cassette players
facing each other) was a song about his love for his imaginary friends.
On his 18th birthday his parents bought him an electric guitar - soon after he started a band with
an ex-con drummer and a friend - the first song they wrote as a band "I'm on a Gorbachev train"
was the best and only song that no-one ever heard.
He started art school and left the guitars behind.
6 or so years later he and a friend found themselves in a triad run casino in the depths of Soho,
he won £200 on Blackjack and after leaving the casino promptly bought a secondhand 12-string guitar
in a local shop.
A few angry songs and a few ridiculous songs later he ended up in another band "Herman".
This band did the odd gig but there were too many cooks spoiling a weak broth and he left to form another band "Apart from the Soul".
A slightly more successful band played songs about "Single Mothers" and "Kerning" (Google it) for a good 5 years.
Then soloist Blabbermouth was born, born into a world of mediocre 6-string guitar welding Singer/Songwriters he
battled against them and won.
After booking Blabbermouth for a gig venue manager Amanda Glyn from the Troubadour wrote this about him:
"Original, refreshing, off-kilter and talented BLABBERMOUTH'S set is by turns hilarious, anthemic, surreal and delightful.
Day to day observations are dished up with deadpan humour, and philosophical issues
revamped so that even the prospect of your own death seems like a good laugh.
If Eddie Izzard could sing and play guitar this is what you might expect."
Blabbermouth continues his battle and has formed an army with BBC6 and lots of regional BBC Radio stations.
He's played many folk festivals including support for Seth Lakeman at The Crawley Folk Festival and
the main stage at Sidmouth Folk Week to a capacity crowd.
Long hours, poor wages, depression, joy, disillusionment, lack of support, poor working conditions.....there is also a down side to the music business that I will reveal later! Hey Steve, hope all is well...Mike in the wild west of California
Thank you so much for the friendship and also for your beautiful songs and the attractive sensibility in your vocals and in your play of guitar and banjo ,nice musicians, good rythmic, big emotion. Pleasant and long musical journey.
