not sure where “favorite bands” end and “influences” begin, but...
meshuggah, opeth, mahavishnu orchestra, helmet, gojira, dillinger escape plan, intronaut, jawbox, deftones, porcupine tree, tool, king crimson, yes (bill bruford era only), coprofago, ephel duath, cat stevens, radiohead, simon & garfunkel, queens of the stone age, living sacrifice, believer, clutch, bjork, faith no more, gordian knot, pat metheny, june of 44, plug, dazzling killmen, soul coughing, rachmaninov, tomahawk, jeff beck, barkmarket, paw, the bad plus, calexico, mastodon, mr. bungle, neurosis, quicksand, benea reach, prong...i could do this all day...
as for drumming influences, that's easy: morgan agren, tomas hakke, danny carey, martin lopez, bill bruford, joey daub, chris pennie, zachary barocas, matt cameron, mike bordin, tim alexander, billy cobham, carter beauford, brann dailor, mike portnoy, lance garvin, gavin harrison, marcelo ruiz, neil peart, jimmy chamberlain, davide piovesan, and others i'm sure.
Neye Benziyor?
sadness, anger, intensity, darkness, and ultimately triumph.
dross is a one-man project. the man was born in 1975, the project was born in 1997 upon the purchase of an analog 4-track recorder.
dross' creator, j, was classically trained on the piano from age 5 to age 14, and on violin for two of those years. he is a self-taught drummer, guitarist, bassist, and “singer,” and despite nine years of formal piano lessons (or perhaps as a direct result of), the drums are what he’s best at.
before, during, and after the inception of dross, j played in several bands. in chronological order, beginning at age 16, these bands are: beggar, model citizen, thumbscrew, drone, and out my tree. with the exception of thumbscrew (guitar/some vocals), drums have been his weapon of choice.
dross also has a one-man project/alter ego named dugan fife, who writes and records folk rock/acoustic vocal tunes. you can check dugan's lame songs by clicking on his "friend" link below.
the dross lineup has never changed, but j's basement studio has. on earlier recordings, the dreaded drum machine was used for lack of proper miking facilities for acoustic drums. that has changed. while not exactly state of the art, j’s basement studio has come a long way in the past ten years.
dross’ latest cd, “exegesis,” has been in the works for almost five years, and was finally completed in august of 2007.
j is a christian, and dross' most recent music reflects that. after spending years in a state of oblivion, a time of ultimate despair led j to turn to God, not knowing whether or not He even existed. God answered so specifically and immediately that the experience could not be interpreted as even remotely coincidental. this resulted in a desire to reconcile science with faith, and these newly opened eyes recognized the evidence of elegant design in the universe as simply too much to dismiss as accidental. while extensively flawed, j is redeemed--it has nothing to do with his inherent goodness, but rather has everything to do with the amazing grace of God. praise Him from whom all blessings flow.

DREAMSCAPE (progressive metal from germany) new cd february 2010!
Thanks for the kind words Josh. Erroneous Flunk was just finished recently...
You're also listed in the credits for Mike's new album. He wanted a tighter, more straight forward drumming feel for That Deadly Night but used your drum parts as a template for a few sections (namely the middle 1-2 minutes). I think their version came out well, with some vocal enhancements that really darkened things up. I've done a lot more playing than originally expected on his recordings and we work well together. We're even planning a covers album now that will be done in a year or so. Mike's stuff is now streaming online at www.mikevieiramusic.com
