Bio
The Getaway is more than a band. These four 20 somethings have come together against great odds to become an instant pop/rock sensation. From bouts with cancer to overcoming being born blind, there's not much this young band hasn't gone through and overcome to have the opportunity to live out their dreams. "We focus on writing not only creative music, but positive music that has the ability to help others overcome the challenges in their own lives," Phil Dunn (vocals, keys, guitar) emphasizes. Joined by Nate Staggs (drums), Alex Wheatley (guitar, vocals), and Scott Singleton (bass) The Getaway is setting the Midwest on fire with their live shows and relentless regional touring before they hit the national stage. Diagnosed in November of 2006 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Nate Staggs was given a grim outlook. At the age of just twenty, he was given a 30% chance to live. For ten months to follow he endured pain that most of us can only begin to imagine. But through high dose chemo therapy and radiation Staggs was able to kick cancer. What he didn't know was that his fight wasn't over yet. Because of the intense chemo and radiation therapy, he developed what is known as avascular necrosis, which is the decrease of calcium in your bones. As a result, he landed back in the hospital four times for two hip and shoulder replacements. But now healthier than he's been in almost six years, Staggs is finally ready to conquer his long time dream. "I told myself if I survived I was going to do everything I could to follow my dream of music. That alone drove me to keep my head above water and get through these hard times. Also, it inspires the positive messages in the music of The Getaway," says Staggs. The band's first official release, "Everybody Wants Fame The EP", was launched in May of 2011. Working with highly acclaimed producer Mike Brown (The Maine, Switchfoot, Papa Roach, Velvet Revolver, Paramore) they've pieced together a five track EP that reels you in with soaring pop melodies, and hooks you with the roaring guitars. Add in the piano for feel and a solid rhythm section, and prepare yourself to sing along and tap your feet until the last note of the EP rings out. "It's nothing short of infectious." (www.ourstage.com) The band is currently touring regionally in the Midwest, and has already written more than a handful of new songs for their next release. Although the band is still relatively new, they're already making big waves and creating a sizeable buzz within the region. As veterans of the industry through previous projects, it won't be long before The Getaway finds their break out moment! -
