With the drive and endurance to last many years and withstand many line-up changes, One Nite Stand has survived and can be called one of the best Smooth Jazz/R&B groups in the Des Moines area.
The band’s current line-up includes: Scott Willsey on guitar & vocals, Larry Sykes playing the bass guitar & vocals, Tommy D on saxophone, flute & vocals, Ben Williams on drums and Jeff Nelson handling the keyboard duties & vocals.
One Nite Stand got its name when they got together for what was supposed to be a one time gig. The show was a hit and it was obvious to those involved that the band should stay together and perform on a regular basis. Soon the band's reputation for professional, high quality shows spread and many places were clamoring to book the guys for return engagements.
Their first gig was at the famous Jazzy Willy's in Des Moines, but the group has also played venues such as the Iowa State Fair, the Des Moines Art Festival, 801 Steak and Chop House, and the Val Air Ballroom. Those in attendance at One Nite Stand performances have included former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, former Des Moines Mayor Preston Daniels and R&B/Soul legends The Fifth Dimension.
Using a wide repertoire of music including: Kenny Garrett, Maceo Parker, Morris Day & The Time and James Brown, One Nite Stand has been called smooth, hip and funky. The band has released a CD entitled, “Under the Covers” a disc of 6 cover tunes and is currently working on original material for their follow up CD.
One Nite Stand is on a mission to prove that their smooth style and infectious grooves will make them the talk of the greater Des Moines music scene and beyond.
