We all need love, we all need to sustain ourselves to survive, and in relation to that, I think one of the most important things that we can learn in life is growth. To understand how we, each one of us as people, evolve in our own lives... the changes we go through, the people we meet, love, and lose... how those relationships shape who we are. We are all connected in some way. Some connections are more intense than others, some are more profound, some are out of necessity, survival, or pleasure... And all of these connections contribute to the kinds of realities we live in. but the most important connection that we can have is with ourselves. It’s my theory that relationships we have with other people contribute to our growth in a secondary way. By this I mean, if we are not connected to ourselves and don't take the time to come to an understanding of how and what these relationships and experiences MEAN to US as individuals, the growth we undertake will be superficial at best. As people we can live through life-altering experiences, and make crazy connections with people, but if we are not connected to ourselves in the most profound sense, and don't take the time to reflect on those experiences and connections, there is no chance for real meaningful growth, or at most it will be very minimal. And growth, I have come to realize, is something that helps us on the road to self-love. And I believe that of the most important kinds of growths that exist, ones that lead to self-love are among the top. Because only when we have self-love will we be able to be happy as people in a genuine sense. To understand oneself and to be at peace with all of our complexities, faults, mistakes, pains, scars, and flaws is a difficult thing to do. And personally, for me, it’s been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. And its also one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things I have ever done as well. To learn to love oneself. Its one of the most challenging things to undertake especially in the context of our society, because there is so much propaganda and hate out there that makes us second guess ourselves, feed into insecurities and superficial means of fulfilling needs that stem deep from our souls. Something I have come to learn is that life is full of challenges... some will make us stronger and some are a waste of time. It is those challenges that will make us better and stronger people that we must be brave enough to undertake and overcome. Learning self-love and growth are one of those challenges that are worthwhile. With that being said, I have discovered that it is not until one can be at peace with all of the heartaches and scars that haunt the past, that one will be able to truly love oneself. And I'm a firm believer that no one can love you, if you don't love yourself first. And I'm also a firm believer that you can never be truly happy unless you truly love yourself. I've discovered that this takes a lot of time. Its a long, long, difficult process.... of thinking, remembering, reflecting, analyzing, forgiving, acknowledging, learning and re-learning.... thinking about who you are as a person... remembering all of the things that has shaped you... reflecting on all of the experiences you have lived through... analyzing yourself and how you react and learn from any given situation... forgiving the people who have caused you hurt and scars in the past... acknowledging the good, the blessings and the people and experiences that made the smiles, the laughter, survival... giving thanks to the people who gave you hope, love, and encouragement... and learning about yourself again from scratch, weeding through the dramas, re-living the tears and laughter through digging deep into the past, into the depth of our souls... and re-learning what all of that means in the grand scheme of things. This is true growth. True growth is essential to self-love. Self-Love is the only way one will ever be truly happy. There are of course many other factors that contribute to one's happiness, self-love, and growth. But I feel like over the past while as I have engaged in deep meditation and self-reflection, these are the things I have learned. And I have learned to be brutally honest with myself, and I have started on my path to learn to be at peace with my past, my scars, and fears. And I feel so much lighter, I feel I have grown so much. So I hope that all of you who are reading this will, will it upon yourselves to take the challenge and do some deep-reflection and strive for true and meaningful growth. We all need to love ourselves more. Only when we are able to truly love ourselves, will we be able to live in a community and society that loves one another. Its only then that we will be able to develop meaningful relationships and build solidarity that is foundational to creating real and true positive changes in the world and in our personal lives. HMMM.... - Christmas…. This thing called Christmas spirit, Christmas cheer, it messes with my head a little bit….. I shall explain. Let me start by stating that I stopped celebrating Christmas. By this I mean I stopped buying gifts and told everyone who usually gets me gifts to please don’t. I’m not a Christian and if I’m not celebrating the birth of Christ, then from my point of view it’s just a time to indulge in materialistic commodification of that which is supposed to be love. “Oh, he got me a diamond necklace, that must mean he really loves me!”…. Society has conditioned many of us to measure affection and love by way of material goods. Now this is of course only one side of the perspectrum (yes I just made up that word: perspectrum = the spectrum of perspectives). Now I think that giving gifts to the ones you love is a beautiful thing and it’s something that I enjoy doing on a regular basis. To show someone that you care by giving a gift that is going to mean something to that person, or something that person needs, is indeed a wonderful thing. But why do we need a holiday, and in my opinion a holiday that is for the most part superficial like most holidays celebrated by main-stream North American Society, to show people that we care by buying gifts? Spending money that we do not have, stressing out, buying people things and acting in a way that we would not on any regular day. A lot of these gifts end up dashed in a corner because they were empty gifts, gifts that were bought out of feelings of obligation, out of “tradition”, “Christmas Cheer”…? This thing called Christmas Cheer or Christmas Spirit makes people act differently from how they normally act. And for me it brings up a question of genuinity. I was on the bus the other day just taking people in. The bus driver was waiving the bus fee left and right. Strangers were talking to each other, being very nice to each other, being so polite and respectful, being kind to one another. Many of you are probably asking yourselves why would I find this to be a problematic thing? Isn’t it a good thing when people treat each other with kindness? YES. Absolutely. The upsetting part is that we as people have so much potential to be kind, to be warm, to unscrew our screwfaces… but the sad reality is that people for the majority of the year walk around with screwface intact, cold, selfish, and greedy... not all people of course, but you guys know the nature of the city. But for some reason during the holidays, people warm up to one another. It’s an amazing thing. And what saddens me even more is the mere fact that I get shock value out of seeing people interact with each other with this kind of kindness… it seemed foreign to me. And because of this it brings again the question of genuinity. Is all of this genuine? No, at least not all of it, but still, I think a good portion of it ends up being genuine. Like when you start off fake-laughing, ha ha ha ha…. eventually you will end up laughing for real, because vibes spread, energies build and snowball, good or bad. I believe some people give over the holidays out of obligation and tradition, but for others it is genuine, and truly does come from a place of love. wow. hmm… ok the spirit of giving taken into context of a society like ours is a complex one. People consumed with the “Spirit of Christmas” will give more over the holidays.... give to people they know, to people they don’t, to people on the streets… crackheads get more cracked out, drunks get more drunk all from the charity of Christmas Spirit, how ironic… Our society has so many layers… layers of class, privilege, ignorance, desperation, love, compassion, apathy, creativity and self destruction. And all the while these things are working together in perpetual webs of causation and correlation… one leading to the next, all working together and creating so many different realities that are all part of the same picture. I saw a crackhead downtown yesterday. “change, change, change, change, change, change, change, change change” she kept repeating over and over, very visibly strung out. It seemed “change” was the only word she was able to say. “change”. we all need change, our world needs change, but the kind of change she was getting out of the "kindness" catalyzed by the “Spirit of Christmas” was accelerating her further toward self destruction. What kind of change should we be offering? is the question that came to mind. The kind that builds up loose in our pockets, or the kind that builds toward something more long-term than the brief moments of kindness we see envoked in the name of “Christmas Cheer” during the “Happy Holidays” and “Seasons Greetings”? Even though some of the kindness displayed in people may be genuine at the moment it comes to fruition, it is still empty if that’s where it begins and ends. The empty greetings, the empty gifts, the empty change. I may be an idealist and a hopeless romantic for love peace and unity, an optimist at heart, but I believe in the potential of people to be kind. I saw it just yesterday. Why is it that we can’t seem to make it last longer than the novelty of a holiday that has been taken over by commercial materialism? Why can’t we find the time to be kind to the people that are around us on the regular old days? If you love someone, why not give them a gift just because you want to, hey its Tuesday, I wanna get you a something because I love you. We have the potential to be genuine and loving all year round. But why do we wait until Christmas time to show people love, to spend time with our families? Why is it that we just can’t seem to find the time for these things until its time to conform, but find the time to be cold, greedy and frivolous all year round?
