Tom Kleinsmith- Bass and general delinquent
Leon Thunder Wheeler- Drums
is made up of Dan Real, Tom Kleinsmith, and Leon Thunder Wheeler. Friends for the past fifteen years, it was in 2002 when these three began jamming together seriously. Leon and Dan have been playing music with eachother on and off for nearly their entire friendship whether it be with four other musicians or just the two of them.
Leon Thunder Wheeler was born during a thunderstorm on a hippie commune in Tennessee. Five days later Dan Real was born in a hospital in Oakland, Ca. It would be another sixteen years before the two of them would meet up and begin to play music together. When Tom Kleinsmith, the youngest and most dangerous member of this trio joined forces with Dan and Leon in 2002 The Real Tom Thunder was born.
From funky dance rock to speedy indie rock and all the way back through reggae and stadium rock, The Real Tom Thunder have developed a sound so uniquely their own even they find it hard to describe.
“Growing up in Oakland, you can’t help but be influenced by so many flavors of music. In Middle School it was rap. In High School it was rock. After High School it was jam-band jamboree, or whatever. I couldn’t help but pick up on all these different styles of drumming. And Dan’s got this incredible guitar skill that blends Mark Knopfler with the likes of James Iha. All of these different styles lend to the creative process and it shows in the final product.” – Leon
Their influences range from Coldplay to The Killers, from The Dave Matthews Band to the Smashing Pumpkins. Throw in the occasional Sublime twist or perhaps a little Led Zeppelin and now we’re talking about The Real Tom Thunder.
Grab a drink, grab a girl, and enjoy the sounds of the Oakland raised band called
The Real Tom Thunder.
