Sounds Like
Wussy are a four-piece rock/pop/noise band from Cincinnati, Ohio. They formed spontaneously in 2001 when Lisa Walker joined Ass Ponys' Chuck Cleaver for a dreaded solo performance. Duo shows soon turned into a somewhat unsteady but engaging full band with the addition of bassist/utility man Mark Messerly and drummer Dawn Burman. Since then the band has cultivated a sound that some have called "high lonesome slash and burn", others "an articulated drone". Their 2005 debut Funeral Dress was a surprise hit among critics and fans alike, earning glowing reviews from Village Voice, Blender, Harp, No Depression, Skyscraper, Big Takeover, and many others - even landing the 12 spot on Robert Christgau's final Pazz and Jop Dean's List. College radio airplay and short tours across the midwest, east coast, and south have helped fuel the record's slow burn. Wussy released their sophomore effort Left for Dead in November of 2007. The album has already received four stars in both Rolling Stone and Spin, as well as great write-ups in Magnet, No Depression, Venus, USA Today, and others. Wussy are most often seen near their native Midwestern soil, but they continue to travel in ever-widening circles. They are perhaps best described in a recent review from their home turf in Cincinnati's CityBeat: "a collection of misfit players and sounds that, when brought together, create something gorgeous and magnetic".
Discography:
Left for Dead (Shake It) - November 2007
Cure for Rigor Mortis (self-released) - May 2007
Funeral Dress (Shake It) - September 2005
"Superb...Imagine a Yo La Tengo too tight to get cute or far out dispensing a Velvet Underground derivative fluent enough to warm the erectile tissue of anyone with a thing for guitar drones." FOUR STARS
Robert Christgau, Rolling Stone
"Haunting and exalting...leavening darkly romantic dysfunction with a little good old-fashioned sex appeal" FOUR STARS Spin
"While Cleaver’s trembling, high-pitched voice seems unworldly emanating from his bulky frame, the small, bellowing Walker appears to be channeling a giant. These two musicians are not mere bandmates: They are trapped in one another’s bodies." Time Out New York
