Influences
the Canadian wilderness, anything i've ever heard - good or bad
Following the mantra of "more is more" The Rebel Year was founded in July 2007 by Kris Ward. The current lineup was solidified in August 2008, and has hit the ground running. Conceived as an alternative to the growing popularity of stripped-down acoustic and electronic duos, The Rebel Year is very much a collaborative effort with each member contributing in their own unique ways. The result is a sound that is unmatched on the Canadian music scene - one that is the product of five musicians with widely varying influences ranging from the power and melody of classic rock acts such as Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to the psychdelic swagger of the Verve and Oasis to the contemporary folk of Wilco and My Morning Jacket.
For some, an album is a great story complete with villains and heroes -- for others, it is a manifesto. For
Ottawa-based band The Rebel Year, their new self-titled record is both - it's a snapshot of troubled times.
The Rebel Year is a thunderous, politically charged 5-song release that assaults the senses by establishing a
pure and organic sound supported by driving rhythyms, intricate guitars and catchy melodies. This album reminds us of where rock and roll came from and provides a glimpse as to where it's headed.
Following the release of their successful debut Pins, Needles and Lights in 2008, The Rebel Year had the privilege of sharing the stage with artists such as The Stills (Arts & Crafts), The Secret Machines (TSM Recordings) and Arkells (Dine Alone Records). The release of The Rebel Year in April 2009, secured the group a spot at Ottawa Bluesfest 2009, a 12-day international music festival that also included performances by Ben Harper, Metric, Stone Temple Pilots, Kiss and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Going forward, the prolific group has plans to record a full-length album for release in 2010. You can bet it will be a sound of the times.
