The Reckless is a band with a long lineage that stretches back to the early-mid 1990s when two of its members, Luke Deveau and Nick Lawrence, became friends and started playing music together. Through the years they have been closely involved in a string of projects and have been, for lack of a better phrase, 'quiet fixtures' on the Halifax rock music scene.
Their first band Slave 2 was formed in 1993 over a mutual love of Stoner Rock, science fiction, pot and LSD. There are fond memories of rehearsing all night at Deep9, waiting for the drummer to show up, drug induced spasms of fear and the joy of playing real gigs for the first time at the now-long-gone Cafe Ole. Their first manager was Gordy 'Giggy-Baby' Jones.
A string of life events such as marriage, divorce, shitty jobs and university studies interceded at the turn of the century and sent Luke and Nick down seperate paths for a few years.
Eventually, the wheel turned anew and in 2002 the two friends found themselves in a mould infested garage in Fairview playing in new band called The Switch. It was a time of experimentation and reconnection both personally and musically. That band had a great lineup, did some touring and recorded a well received independent record in 2005 (hear some of it at myspace.com/theswitchtheband). The Switch split up on friendly terms in 2006 after a crazy final show at the awesome Halifax venue Gus' Pub.
Both hungry to keep creating music, Luke and Nick recruited, invited (or possibly stole) Mr. Matt Sullivan from the Blank Stares (with whom they had both been previously impressed) to sing in a new band comprised of old friends and new faces. This is where Jamieson MacKinnon entered the picture. Through an online ad Luke and Jay met up and jammed. Impressed with the drummer's skill and attitude Luke invited him to join the as yet unnamed new band. Several practices and a few personel acquisitions later Yeah You emerged - naked, wet and cooing softly in its own language. The band lasted long enough to play a string of shows in the summer of 2007 and record one song (hear it at myspace.com/layyourbabydown) before going its collective separate ways.
There having been an immediate determination to keep making music together, Luke, Nick and Jay have stuck together since that time. The music of The Reckless is a culmination of all those years of fun and work and is the logical next step in their artistic endevours. Luke has taken on the role of singing lead as well as playing guitar. Nick's fine bass playing along with Jay's drumming and talent for harmony vocals contribute immeasurably to what is a unique new sound.
There is a lot more yet to come. Stay tuned.
