Sounds Like
A handful of skilled improvisors looping and layering themselves in real time to build gorgeous, evocative and sometimes very funky sound collages, that incorporate a massive range of influences from ambient to avant garde, funk to folk, jazz to jam-band!
the recycle collective is a project started by acclaimed solo bassist steve lawson, creating a monthly live event for the various duos and trios that he's been assembling and recording over the last couple of years. from those collaborations, a shared aesthetic emerged that had less to do with style, and more to do with what happens when small groups of musicians have musical conversations in which each is an equal partner - improvising becomes composing and beguiling new music emerges.
for the listener, it makes for the finest musical night out in london - chilled sounds in one of london's most evocative new venues - the low lighting and middle eastern decor of darbucka world music bar providing the perfect space for the ambient loveliness of the music.
the musicians involved include some of the most celebrated in london - cleveland watkiss, orphy robinson, theo travis, bj cole, patrick wood,
Leo Abrahams,
Seb Rochford,
Andy Hamill,
Huw Warren amongst others - appearing in different combinations and fusing elements from jazz to electronica, free improv to ambient, african rhythms to hip-hop vocals, haunting pedal steel guitar to evocative alto flute. the result is a series of breath-taking, diverse soundscapes - the perfect london soundtrack.
why recycle? well, much of the music we make is based on real-time audio looping - music that is played live, looped and played back to be layered, processed, faded, reversed and generally messed about with. none of it is pre-recorded. we just take the things that are happening there and then and recycle them! this leads to music that is hypnotic, multi-layered, evolving, spacious and gives the musicians time and space to explore.
each month we'll be having a different recycling collection, and bringing stuff to be recycyled will qualify for money off CD sales on the night.
