Clayton native Rusty Pounds (lead vocal/guitar/red hair) first met Chris Cardwell (vocals/guitar) at work several years ago. The two became good friends, discovered their common musical interest and got together to play guitar just for fun. The performing and songwriting chemistry between them was immediate and obvious, so they began playing regularly for friends and at coffee shops as The Redheaded Strangers. Some compare Rustys lead vocal musings to that of Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page, with Chris lending strong guitar support to their unique sound.
While looking to record a demo CD last year, the pair approached local producer Paul Barton of Studio 415. We felt comfortable together right away says Barton and the songs are all simple, first person musical tales in an easygoing, straightforward style. Its great fun, and we all wanted this developed further.
Now, with Barton rounding out the trio on electric guitar and vocals, they plan to perform regularly, add on musicians and promote their debut CD, scheduled for release in September 2006. A three song demo EP is currently available at Redheaded Strangers shows.
I dont care how much Rusty insists, said Barton, I wont dye my hair red!
