BIOGRAPHY

After suffering a near-fatal seizure eight years ago, visionary performer Trash McSweeney now sees color in his music and has set out to share with the world all the ideas about what he has seen and felt. By taking to his guitar, piano and notebook, The Red Paintings were officially born upon the dawn of the new millennium.

Initially based in Australia – and having been fortunate enough to already tour much of the globe – The Red Paintings are a five-piece group (guitar, bass, drums, cello & violin) who incorporate additional orchestral, choral and performance art features wherever possible. With costumes, themes, painters and other artists their shows combine sound and visuals to create a living canvas that stimulates the senses and minds of the audience. A true and unique art experience. The Red Paintings’ sounds evoke everything from child-like lullabies of the future, to tearing, biting, alternative-rock numbers. They are sometimes compared to multi-faceted acts like Radiohead, Muse, and The Arcade Fire, and their appeal reaches baroque-pop steam-punks, metal-heads, indie-rock fanatics, and beyond.

Utilising years of cumulative experience, as well as every available resource, Trash & Co. are wrapped in recording their full-length debut album, ‘The Revolution Is Never Coming’, a record of truly epic proportions. Sharing desires shaped from a passionate worldview, ‘The Revolution Is Never Coming’ is what Trash hopes will be the tipping point for the band's career. With their diverse history and cult following, the band has stepped into 2009 with an arsenal of music, a highly-praised innovative live performance, and die-hard fans (who Trash says are "the best on the planet"). It truly looks as though the future is now for the band.

Prior to this most recent endeavor, the band first released two EPs in their Robot Trilogy series, ‘Walls’ and ‘Destroy The Robots’. By taking their show to the streets alongside dozens of fans, the band staged marches throughout capital cities and towns in Australia with intricately designed futuristic costumes and 9-foot robot statues. With all eyes upon their excitingly provocative performance art and accompanying nightly shows, three tracks from the EPs gained high rotation on well-known radio stations including Triple J, Nova, and Sports Talk UK. With EPs selling well and charting week after week - including a mind-blowing 15 weeks on the Net 50 - the band kept things buzzing with interviews and reviews across the globe. To date, they have made appearances in such distinguished print media as Rolling Stone, Blunt, and NME.

After being handpicked as support for Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, the band also played major festivals including Big Day Out, Livid and The Great Escape. They shared the stage with bands such as The White Stripes, Sigur Rós, and The Polyphonic Spree, which helped them reach across diverse fan-bases to much acclaim. Fortunately, some of the converted happened to be fans of self-proclaimed "punk cabaret" duo The Dresden Dolls, to whom The Red Paintings were mentioned as a potential "perfect fit" support slot on the Australian leg of their world tour.

Singer/songwriter Amanda Palmer (one half of The Dolls) contacted The Red Paintings with an offer to tour Australia together. After winning over The Dolls' hearts and praise in those few shows, the band was asked to tour as direct support throughout the rest of The Dolls' 2006 tour including shows in New Zealand, The United States, and the United Kingdom. The tour was an extreme success, and reached maximum stride each night when Trash performed Tears For Fears' song "Mad World" alongside The Dolls during their encore.

Despite having a trailer of equipment stolen while on the road, The Red Paintings managed to persevere in top form, and were fortunate enough to sell as many as 170 CDs per show! In the final days of 2006, two successful products chronicling the tour and the band's experiences throughout were released as an epilogue of the year; their first-ever DVD (a tour documentary) and live EP (which sold out in record time).

Before closing out 2007 with two monumental Christmas-themed charity concerts, the band released the final EP in their Trilogy, ‘Feed The Wolf’, and embarked on The Animal Rebellion tour (as well as like-minded marches in which – this time – they donned costumes depicting genetically engineered animals). These helped sales surpass the 20,000-unit mark for all TRP CD releases to date! Riding this wave of success, the band released their final single and music video from ‘Feed The Wolf’ in December; the beautifully haunting ballad entitled "We Belong In The Sea”. This otherworldly dirge served as the perfect requiem for ‘Feed The Wolf’, closing a very pivotal chapter in the history of TRP.

Following the success of the single on MySpace and YouTube (the mournfully grand video reached top honors on YouTube in December 2007), the band plunged headlong into an Australian and U.S. "Sea" tour. This included an invite to perform at the prestigious MUSEXPO conference wherein the band received praise from industry guru, Bob Lefsetz.

The Red Paintings have refocused their attention on their fan-sponsored record, ‘The Revolution Is Never Coming’, which to date has generated over $40,000 in donations. Never wanting to be outdone and always wanting to keep fans stimulated, the band has been hard at work on album production, while at the same time, working on an elaborate accompanying stage show and tour. The Red Paintings have always set themselves apart in their live performances by building stage shows and events that incorporate the imagery and messages from their releases (such as the aforementioned trilogy), and the debut record will be no different.

Equipped with their full-length debut, the band is poised to strike in 2009. The band has just completed an Australian tour as main support for popular punk group Mindless Self Indulgence and earlier in the year for American poet and mastermind Saul Williams and have just recently relocated to Los Angeles to begin touring. Like no other act, The Red Paintings are journeying into the future with vibrant and visionary performances that are sure to impact tour destinations new and familiar alike.

While not touring, the band continues to spread their positive message online. Buzz and positive reviews pour in daily from new and old fans around the globe. If the intelligence and craftsmanship of the bands back catalogue and live shows are any indication of what fans have to expect from the record, then they are truly in for a ride. Perhaps the band will prove even themselves wrong and show the world that, in fact, the revolution is coming. It is here and now, and The Red Paintings are at the front of it.

Songwriter Trash McSweeney, an advocate for animal rights, organized an historic benefit show for the controversial Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on 21st November 2008, to help raise awareness of and stop whale slaughtering. The band have kept their relationship strong with the Shepherds and recorded a parody of Midnight Oil's "Beds are Burning", called "Whales are Dying", with lyrics by Captain Paul Watson and Trash McSweeney. The band also shot a music video for the song which was released in January 2009.

Trash, now an L.A resident, has recently been playing solo at festivals and private parties for Sea Shepherd, with Paul Watson as a special guest for his first vocal live appearance singing the "Whales are dying". The bands' debut album ‘The Revolution Is Never Coming’ has spent 2 years in production to-date with mixing and tracking in studios all over the planet including Brisbane Australia, Winnipeg Canada and Los Angeles California, with current mixing taking place in Nashville Tennessee and Toronto Canada until August 2009. The album and music videos are slated for a release (we hope) in the US of A at the end of 2009.

FILMS

Earthlings, 2007
directed by Shaun Monson

“If I could make everyone in the world see one film, I’d make them see ‘Earthlings’”. - Prof. Peter Singer, Author (Animal Liberation)
Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix - a huge animal rights supporter - 'Earthlings' tells of the five ways humans abuse animals, and shows the effects this has on ourselves, the earth and the animals.
"I've met with the director and creator of this film,
Shaun Monson
. He was an interesting fellow, and we seemed to hit it off instantly, both having the same passions (and many things to share with one another). He’s now making an incredible new documentary called "Unity" – he explained its meaning to me, and I was in awe to be around such an enlightened, hardworking, unselfish person who has seen and felt so much, incredible. I'm very thankful.
I was eating meat and happily drinking dairy until I saw 'Earthlings' and was completely and utterly convinced that not eating meat and having a vegan diet was the best thing I could EVER do, not just for my own body, and not just for other humans... as always, a majority of us will instantly think about our own health and families before even considering other beings which is the most selfish and annoying of all. This was the whole reason I worked so hard on the Animal Rebellion in Australia, so people actually thought about the effect a disintegrating planet would have on animals, and that they too are effected by all that is happening, and are also feeling the changes. Please everyone try to see this film. I cant stress how important it is." - Trash McSweeney.
It is available in streaming format here – if you choose to watch it this way, please give back by supporting the film at the official site – this is a DVD you will want to own.

Lolita, 2003
directed by Tim Gorski

Another film that we should all see. Life and times of a killer whale captured and made to entertain humans in a local sea park – for over 37 years. One for the whole family, this film goes into much depth on one whales incredible journey and those doing everything in their power to release her. I was lucky enough to become friends with director, Tim, and he informed me that Lolita is still living in her undersized tank. Tim is currently working on a new film uncovering the cruelty to elephants in Southeast Asia. I’ve seen some footage recently, and it’s heart wrenching to know our planet supports such crimes.

The Cove, 2009
directed by Louie Psihoyos

The Cove follows an elite group of activists as they work to uncover the true horrors of Taiji, a secluded bay in Japan. In a remote, glistening cove, surrounded by barbed wire and “Keep Out” signs, lies a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji, driven by a multi-billion dollar dolphin entertainment industry and an underhanded market for mercury-tainted dolphin meat, engage in an unseen hunt. The nature of what they do is so chilling – and the consequences are so dangerous to human health – they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing it. The brutal, harrowing dolphin slaughter of Taiji Cove.

End of the Line, 2009
directed by Rupert Murray

Imagine an ocean without fish? 'The End of the Line', is the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans. Scientists predict that if we continue fishing as we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048. The film lays the responsibility squarely on consumers who innocently buy endangered fish, politicians who ignore the advice and pleas of scientists, fishermen who break quotas and fish illegally, and the global fishing industry that is slow to react to an impending disaster.
