Jeff Buckley is alive. That's the only way I can explain what's going on with the release of The Relyx's EP, Strange Living. I mean, sure. It's a little more polished than Buckley's original work. Strange Living has the sound of a band that's been in hiding for a decade, working on putting together a really strong five-song album to reintroduce... err, introduce themselves to the world. They're bluesy at times, soulful at others, and have a ridiculously appealing sound to their music. - The Inept Owl, 11/16/09
Boring into the past for inspiration, The Relyx unearth the soul of the blues, adding modern flourishes of soul-rock to a rich musical tradition. This tradition is evident in the driving rhythms and propulsive energy of The Relyx’s enormously bluesy and soulful sound.
The band formed in Brooklyn in early 2007, coalescing around their shared appreciation for ‘60s classic rock and vintage soul. Although they’re informed by the classics, they’re not defined by them. Rather, their keen ear for soaring choruses and polished rhythms, create an unmistakably modern feel. Their standout track “Baby I Gotta Go,” has recently drawn comparison to the southern gothic rock of Kings of Leon.
Nathan Lacy’s rich and sultry vocals slither up your spine, like a snake around the arms of a chair; while Scott Laughlin pummels the drums with clockwork precision. Jeremiah Furr’s epic leads emit echoes of the greats, as Ariel Scherbacovsky’s smart and funky bass lines exude charm, while providing the music with its undeniable character.
The Relyx have toiled long and hard within the New York City live music scene and are poised for a breakout year in 2010. The 4th quarter will see them gigging locally and regionally, while preparing to release their new EP, Strange Living.
The time is ripe for The Relyx, as the The Relyx are ripe for the times.
Discerning music fans would be wise to hop aboard now as the train
will surely get crowded.
