VALENTINE'S DAY
Xenovibes released "Last Date" the single off their upcoming CD 'Xing Paths' as a free download to celebrate this day. Featuring the theremin, "Last Date" is Shueh-li's reworking of the Floyd Cramer piano piece written in 1960. In case you're wondering, the slip note piano technique was popularized by Mr Cramer, an American Hall of Fame pianist.
The theremin is put through phase distortion and played in a non portamento style.
Download "Last Date" for a listen.

2009

We took a hiatus : - ) Thanks for sticking with us. We only had a recommendation from Philip Neidlinger for our segment on "theremin makers" so we decided to postpone it.
We would like someone to recommend the next feature artist though and please provide their current email contact. Many artists have missed out on a feature opportunity because our emails to them met with no reply.

SELECTED BY: the Theremin Connection"

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "Having spent much time with Randy, it is without a doubt that he is a sensitive man with a serious attitude toward his theremin playing. A consummate performer who ploughs that energy into his music."

FACT:
"The theremin found me by presenting itself in a simple picture. I had an idea of the sound it created, but I had never seen one before. The very moment I could visualize the instrument, the gears in my mind switched into hyperdrive! I was simply struck with awe. After having the wonderful opportunity to share the theremin with the world, it continues to shape my life into something I could never have dreamt before."

SELECTED BY: Dorit Chrysler; "...A brilliant musician - and collegue and friend - wonderful to play duets with him."

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "When Rob tickles the ivories, they guffaw in delight while the theremin is carried away by his performance!"

FACT:
"I became enamored with the theremin when I saw a clip of Clara on the show Night Music in the early 90's (or so.) Wow! Anywho, I love seeing if I can fit the theremin in--ok, it didn't quite fit with the bluegrass band ... I've been lucky to play theremin with Bobby McFerrin, Simon and Garfunkel, The Klezmatics, Vernon Reid, etc."

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; “Dorit IS the fairy dust in her distinctive and ethereal take on the theremin and voice. Simply beautiful!"

FACT: “Encountering the Theremin was love at first sight. It inspires autonomous approach and exploration - a true chance to find your own style. I grew up with classical training, then fronting a rock band in nyc for many years. A Theremin satisfies and merges all those backgrounds. Together with Suzanne Fiol I founded the NY Theremin Society. It is especially important to me to demonstrate, that a Theremin can hold up well in todays world of electronic music.

FESTIVAL FOR THE MONTH of APRIL

Associate: ETHERMUSICFEST
AshevilleNC, USA
(Festival)
myspace.com/ethermusicfest

REVIEW:
TC says; "A MUST support event! Those of you attending, please leave us a comment about your plans. Perhaps we might have a hookup with friends from TC!"

FACT:
"As a celebration of the vibrant Theremin community, Moog Music will again sponsor an International Theremin Festival – EtherMusic Festival 2008. This event will feature workshops and concerts, factory tours and much, much more. An exciting component of the weekend will be an original composition contest, with the winner performing their composition for theremin at the event. The current line-up includes special appearances by Lydia Kavina, Dorit Chrysler, Carolina Eyck, Xenovibes and Randy George! April 24-27, 2008 Asheville, NC. Be sure to schedule in extra time to visit the world-famous Biltmore House and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains."

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH of MARCH
Notating for the Theremin

There has been some discussion over whether there should exist Theremin specific notation. From what we understand, most people utilise the traditional western classical system and its repertoire of dynamic markings such as p and f, the fp / marcato indications such as for strings, and glissando and vibrato.
Synthesizer players are in a similar position; an area that will be covered in another issue.

Our feature composer for the month utilizes traditional notation. Gianluca sampled a theremin which he midi orchestrated into a 'mock-up' film score for approval by director/producer before actual recording.

Associate: Gianluca Piersanti
LA, USA
(Composer)
myspace.com/gianlucapiersanti

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "Gianluca's Theremin line on 'Theremin Hp Clo 6FH' (Library CD he did for RAI Trade; Italian TV network) is poignant and articulate."

FACT:
"I was at first fascinated with the theremin when i was a kid... watching the original Twilight Zone series on TV. It has been one of my favourite musical instrument since then. I hope i'll have the chance to involve it more often in my compositions."

pekkanini.se

SELECTED BY: Gordon Charlton who says that Pekka is a "Swedish composer and thereminist who brings a real sense of joy and love for the instrument to his zany youTube videos"

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "Pekkanini's magical antics (youtube videos) create an entertaining complement to his crafty theremin playing! "

FACT:
"My artistname is Pekkanini and I am a swedish musician/composer with theremin as a speciality. I have my background in, more or less known, swedish rockbands. My main occupation, for the last 25 years or so, has been as a composer of music for drama, mainly at theaters. I play keyboard, guitar an bass relatively well and since 2002 I've tried to develop my theremin-skills."

Member: Beat Frequency
Croxley Green, UK
(Thereminist Professional)
myspace.com/beatfrequencyuk

SELECTED BY: Kevin Sinnot; "Beat Frequency (aka Gordon Charlton) is a true one off in theremin circles. He combines experimental sounds, words and images to great effect. He brought together a gathering of theremin enthusiasts at " Hands Off 2007" and made it a stupendous success. He can also play two theremins at once. Enough said. Respect.

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "As Gordon's gently pulls and pushes for a response, what you hear is the raw beating of this very animated instrument that refuses to be touched. A re'sounding' success for both man and beast."

FACT: "The interesting thing about the theremin is not that there is no physical contact, but that there is electrical contact - the player is literally part of the circuit, making the theremin not merely electronic but cybernetic. The name Beat Frequency was chosen to reflect my interest in the science of the instrument as well as the musical possibilities it offers."

Member: Kevin Sinnott
Liverpool, UK
(Thereminist Professional)
myspace.com/kevinsinnott

SELECTED BY: David Vessel; "He is a UK thereminist who specialized in instrumental electronica works that are very inventive and well done (and he recorded and submitted to me unsolicited the current theme song for Spellbound)."

MUSIC REVIEW:
TC says; "Kevin's electro-acoustic music can only be described as 'smooth'. His is clearly as at home assembling dance beats as he in the realm of the more experimental."

FACT:
"I live in Liverpool, UK and love my three theremins. I'm currently working on the follow up to my first album "Theremins of the World (unite and take over)". My piece 'Music for Theremin' has been the theme tune for the Cygnus Radio show 'Spellbound - A brief program of music for Theremin' for the past year and a half. I like to create a story within my compositions and use the theremin as the main character to narrate life, death, joy and sorrow."

About me:

THEREMIN CONNECTION will attempt to keep current a list of entities associated with the theremin. The list will only specify their area(s) of expertise/style and location.
Be in our database
Select CATEGORY (see list below) and send us ALL the information as required of the database. TC is here to support all our members no matter what stage of their career they are in.

Who I'd like to meet:

TC hopes to engage everybody; whether they are professional or not, classical players, experimental or others. Even "Makers of" theremins such as electronic engineer-musicians and commercial entities, and finally "Promoters of" theremin music and their practitioners namely internet radios, magazines and more.
Any assistance in helping TC maintain the database will be appreciated. A special thanks to Buddy Craigg.

Many thanks Theremin Connection.

PS By the way, I recorded a short number (about 2 years ago) entitled 'Piece for Ukelele, Theremin & Saxophone'.
I think I must be from the atmospheric/experimental/drone school of Theremin-playing
