After the unexpected success of Return of the Living Dead in 1985, actor Don Calfa and friend Roger Carney wrote a treatment for a direct sequel that would continue immediately after the events of the movie. Entitled Revenge of the Living Dead, the concept excited various producers and director Dan O'Bannon but instead the rights were sold on and Warner would release Return of the Living Dead Part II three years later, using an entirely different story with only two of the original cast members (double act James Karen and Thom Matthews).
Fast forward over twenty years later and British artist Gary Smart has adapted the treatment into a graphic novel, which sees the survivors of ROTLD attempting to flee the city from not only the walking dead but also the army (which was echoed in the screenplay for ROTLD II). As yet unpublished, Revenge of the Living Dead is an exciting continuation of ROTLD and a treat for fans to see which direction the series could have taken.

Return of the Living Dead is the franchise that was first conceived in 1985. Originally intended as a loose sequel to George A. Romero's seminal classic Night of the Living Dead, ROTLD was first published in 1979 by author John Russo, who had split from ex-writing partner Romero and had taken the 'Living Dead' monicker with the intention of making his own sequel to NOTLD. It would be another six years until the movie would finally see the light of day, written and directed by Alien's Dan O'Bannon.
After a 3D feature to have been directed by Tobe (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Hooper was scrapped, O'Bannon developed a new concept, far removed from Russo's novel, which would see a group of punks and warehouse workers attacked by zombies (Russo would write another ROTLD novel to accompany the film). The movie was a great success, overshadowing the release of Romero's darker sequel Day of the Dead, and would become a firm favourite with zombie fans.
The movie would be followed by four sequels (1988's Return of the Living Dead Part II, 1993's Return of the Living Dead III, and 2005's double feature Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Rave to the Grave, both filmed at Chernobyl in Ukraine). Despite each sequel being less successful than the last, the ROTLD franchise has become a cult classic and loved by horror fans the world over.
