Rew's Interests
|
| General | Saving the world (one forum post at a time).
Nature scenery.
Bible study, church, and Eucharist.
Native American awareness issues.
Reading (biblical/theological scholarship, social issues, devotional/contemplative material, sci-fi/fantasy, novels, etc.).
Writing (columns, journals, but especially fiction).
Duke basketball, NFL football (Carolina and Washington), college football (South Carolina and yes, even Duke).
Certain video games: Namely Zelda and Mega Man (especially the X series). Mario and Metroid receive honorable mentions. Zelda is something of a gaming passion for me, however.
My three dogs and cat. I think I look forward to seeing them more when I get home than my own family. =P
The British Isles.
Biking, hiking, and dancing. And none of those are so enjoyable as doing them in my bare feet.
Barefooting (no fetish, though).
Good, strong, firm, hugs. None of this half-assed, pansy, side-armed crap. Real hugs! 'Cause we all need the love. =0) | | Music | Classical music.
Movie soundtracks.
Game soundtracks.
Celtic music.
Pop rock (certain kinds).
Alternative rock (not screechy please).
Contemporary Christian (though I loathe the lyrics, ironically enough).
'90s music.
Christmas music (done well--not pop rock crap).
Examples: Kildare, Daughtry, Staind, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, The Cranberries, Mannheim Steamroller.
Least favorite musical genres: Opera, country, rap, and '80s music (in that order). | | Movies | The Star Wars saga (a six-part tale of the most dysfunctional family in the galaxy).
Superman (i.e. 1, 2, & Returns--not so much 3 or 4.)
Spider-Man (all, though 3 is notably inferior to the first two).
Batman Begins (the '90s series was okay too, but can't compare to this one).
Shrek (the first two were epic in their hilarity--the third was atrocious).
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (quite possibly the greatest comedy ever made).
Office Space (not far behind Monty Python).
I have a liking for certain indie movies like Napoleon Dynamite and Dummy.
Most Adam Sandler movies (especially Click and 50 First Dates).
Red vs. Blue series.
The Corporation (a stunning expose' of a documentary every American should watch). | | Television | The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad--oh hell, who am I kidding, I don't even watch TV unless there's a game on I'm interested in seeing. =P
I also like the BBC religious sitcom, The Vicar of Dibley, but most have never heard of it.
I have a passionate loathing for (so-called) reality TV shows, and none are so horrific as the dating ones. | | Books | Oh boy, I could almost write a book on this all its own...
Favorite Books I've Read:
Would it be generic of me to say the Bible? Nay, let us not be lacking in piety! (I appreciate the Apocrypha too, it should be noted.)
The Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder. It literally changed my entire view of the one who founded my worldview.
The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics, a collaborative effort. Long, expensive, but readable, but it does a damned good job of showing that, yes, liturgy matters in ethics--at least Christian ethics.
Almost anything by N.T. Wright, especially Jesus and the Victory of God. An even more life-changing author for me than Yoder.
Brian McLaren's works on postmodern Christianity (especially A New Kind of Christian) were indispensible for first getting me to think outside the standard evangelical box, even if I no longer put much stock in postmodernism itself.
Blood Brothers by Elias Chacour. This should be required reading for anyone interested in the volatile Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. If I could only become one-tenth the man Paul Farmer is....
My favorite works of fiction were both authored by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Both completely changed the way I view fiction and the art of crafting a story. That, and they're f***ing epic.
Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur. My favorite novel from over a decade ago that still leaves its impression to this day.
The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. I never even read them until I was an adult either. (For shame.)
I also have a thing for Star Wars books too, both novelizations of the movies themselves and beyond. Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover I consider to be one of the finest pieces of writing I've ever encountered, not just in Star Wars but anywhere.
"To Read" List:
Lies My Teacher Told Me and Lies Across America both by James Loewen.
Wealth as Peril and Obligation by Sondra Ely Wheeler.
Improvisation by Sam Wells.
Wondrous Depth by Ellen Davis.
The Art of Reading Scripture by various scholars and exegetes.
I need to read more Wendell Berry and Paul Farmer. Those two are seriously the prophets of our times. Stanley Hauerwas too (my former ethics professor, incidentally).
| | Heroes | The saints and martyrs both within the Christian church and without. |

Rew's Blurbs |
About me:
My name is Andrew Anderson. The significance of which is?
My last name is Anderson;
I graduated from Anderson College,
Which is now Anderson University,
Located in Anderson, South Carolina,
Which also happens to be in Anderson County.
Anderson literally means "son of Andrew";
My first name is Andrew,
And I live in Columbia off St. Andrews Road.
I'm 27 but sometimes still feel like I'm 20.
I am an introvert with extroverted tendencies. Other times, however, I'm a loner.
I am a Christian but am neither evangelical nor liberal.
Postliberal Christian seems to be the best descriptor of my worldview. Or perhaps Anglican with an Anabaptist bent.
Probably my single greatest conviction is my belief in Christian pacifism. And no, that's not a contradiction in terms, regardless of how misguided the Crusaders were (both past and present).
Politically, I tend to lean to the left but arrive at my conclusions by a far different route than your standard hippy or liberal.
I like hippies, though I am not one myself.
I have frequently thought that my future wife will be some sort of hippie momma.
Although 27, I'm not currently looking to date anyone. Sorry if I'm failing society's expectations in this regard.
I like to go barefoot--all the time. Yes, this includes stores and restaurants. No, there actually isn't anything wrong with that. (That being said, I don't always go barefoot, at least not as often as I'd like.)
Flip-flops are pretty much my sole alternative to barefooting; it's never too cold for me. I rarely ever wear socks or close-toed shoes (i.e. only when I must).
I am a true lover of the English language and am as obsessive-compulsive over grammar as possible. This includes MySpace profiles, blogs, posts, PMs, IMs--even writing notes on sticky pads.
Please let me know if you find a grammatical/spelling error anywhere on this profile. =/
I have an obsessive infatuation with the British Isles, which just happens to be my ancestral homeland.
My dream is to study theology (namely the intertwining of Scripture, liturgy, and ethics) at the doctoral level somewhere in Britain.
I prefer the simplicity of the unadorned MySpace profile instead of those tacky custom layouts that are all the rage.
I'm very wordy but am trying to ween myself off of that.

You Are a Peacemaker Soul
|
You strive to please others and compromise anyway you can.
War or conflict bothers you, and you would do anything to keep the peace.
You are a good mediator and a true negotiator.
Sometimes you do too much, trying so hard to make people happy.
While you keep the peace, you tend to be secretly judgmental.
You lose respect for people who don't like to both give and take.
On the flip side, you've got a great sense of humor and wit.
You're always dimplomatic and able to give good advice.
Souls you are most compatible with: Warrior Soul, Hunter Soul and Visionary Soul

Who I'd like to meet:
Friendly people!
Now there are two sides to the spectrum that I've never understood:
- People who are overall unfriendly. Yes, I appreciate "brutally honest" to a point--but why must it be brutal?
- People who are too "nice" to tell how they truly feel about you. In all seriousness, it's much preferable for you to tell me to my face you don't like and/or no longer wish to associate with me than just ignoring me, taking me off your friend list, etc.
I'm looking for friendly, courteous people who yet have the grace to be honest and upfront with me if you have a problem with me, so we can hash it out. I'm not looking for either side of the spectrum, rather someone who holds kindness and forthrightness in balance. =0)
I sometimes go on lazy streaks when it comes to answering comments and/or PM's. If I find that this is bothering someone who's written to me, however, I make special efforts to get back to them. Don't be afraid to hassle me.
Likewise, I have sometimes wigged out after not hearing from someone after a while. Feeling ignored is a rather large pet peeve of mine. Unless I know you mean well. ;0)
I'm open to meeting in person (er, generally anyway), but I reserve talking on the phone only for special people and/or circumstances. (Not because I am an elitist but because I generally hate talking on the phone; I typically only use it for making plans and other pragmatic purposes.)
For the record, I'm saving sex for marriage. (Yes, this was an issue once for someone trying to befriend me.)

Finally, one more thing: Marvel at the monkey fetus.
I adopted a cute lil' monkey fetus
from Fetusmart! Hooray fetus!
