The original Rhythm Checkers was a German band from Sarrelouis playing beat music.
The Founding line up was in 1965

In 1966 they played in the French border town Strasbourg without Dave Kelly. With the search for a new guitarist they recruit Robby Stierheim ex Black and white; Roby take the band to see the Skat Five with her singer and drummer Roland Bauer

February 21, 1967 they go back to Paris for a new show at the Olympia theatre with a new line up Dany Gentner ex Black and White replaced Kurth. This time they open for Chuck Berry. They make a wild performance and played four song “Long tall Sally” the old standard “Kansas City written by Leiber and stoller for Wilbert Harrison revisited at the time by the Beatles.The Wilson Pickett hit “Land of thousand dances” and the Small Faces cover “I can’t dance with you “. These four songs will be published on disc by the small label AGD

Bomp review: Alsace is the part of France that sometimes belongs to Germany, and it values its own culture. Hence this lavish book, which begins with Bill Haley, follows rock & roll to France with Vince Taylor, and takes off on a wild spin through scores of artists and groups; some, like the Dynamites and Ronnie Bird will be familiar, and those who collect '60s Euro 45s and EPs will recognize many others. It's in French, but so what? The hundreds of amazing photos, many in color, make this worth having. Mostly they're hopeful, obscure groups ranging from dorky to menacing, and some are truly strange, like Le Ku Klux Klan, with white masks, or Les Meharistes dressed as arab sheiks, on a parade float with giant papier-mache Mod dancers, or Les Falcons looking ridiculous in Sgt. Pepper uniforms. I also like the shot of Chuck Berry with the worshipful Rhythm Checkers, looking suitably nonplused. Plus there's many photos of club, concert and street scenes, many rare records pictured in color, and more. I don't know where you'd find this (Amazon France doesn't carry it, but that doesn't mean it's not in print) but it's worth the effort. And oh yeah... it comes with a 25-track CD too!

The Rhythm Checkers were an exceptional beat group playing a raw mixture of rhythm and blues and rock and roll with a wild garage attitude. Maybe we can call them the European Sonics. Formed by musicians native to France, Germany and Holland with Roland 'Bouboule' Bauer (vocal), the regretted Robby Sterheim (lead guitar), Eddy Van Nelfen (rhythm guitar), Kurth Horbach (bass), later replaced by Dany Gentner and Norbert Holweck (drums), they set the stage on fire during their shows in France between the years 1966 and 1967. It is in Strasbourg where The Rhythm Checkers release their first EP with their powerful composition 'Cause I Need You,' which is a real classic of European garage rock. Their second EP is a unique document of their stage savageness thanks to these recordings captured live when they opened for Chuck Berry in Paris on February 1967. It's amazing how these guys made it live, they make my wig jump listening on record. The eight mythical tracks of their two rare records are present on this LP, and as a bonus, both sides of their single recorded in 1972 during the reformation of the group under the name of Checkers in the prog-pop style of the time. The record comes with an insert with all the history and never-published photos of the band, both in English and French. Limited release of 500 copies only!

Long running favourites of the garage beat ‘n punk crowd who count the likes of Diggin’ For Gold among the top compilations of the last fifteen years or so. The Rhythm Checkers were made up primarily of German guys, with a Dutchman, and a French wildman on board to complete the line-up - no doubt majorly transforming it in the process. They would soon become favourites of the 1966 Strasbourg & Paris club scenes, famously playing on a bill that included Jerry Lee Lewis, and Vince Taylor.
Though The Rhythm Checkers’ discography was scant, with only a couple of EPs (released on the small AGD label) to their name during the original, brief heyday of the group, the sounds they produced were nonetheless fabulous; primitively so, and the original discs are now becoming increasingly scarce, even in collector circles. However, you don’t have to shell out a small fortune for the real McCoy any more - on the rare occasion that the original EPs do show up - as Portugal’s truly fine Groovie label have come up trumps by heaping everything together, and unleashing them on this crazy long-player.
‘Cause I Need You’ is one of the group’s few original compositions, written by guitarists Robby Stierheim and Eddy van Nelfen, and with its crude frug’n’strut rhythmic style is easily one of the set’s strongest tracks. Pure slow burning cool in the way that some cuts on The Pretty Things’ awesome Get The Picture LP are. The way the ‘Checkers effortlessly insinuate their barrage of noise deep into your brain draws parallels of similarity with the ‘Pretties also. ‘Theme Of The Rhythm Checkers’ is special too, and their highly-personalised and fairly brutal rendering of (New York outfit) The King Bees’ ‘On Your Way Down The Drain’ has to be heard if you dig mid-‘60s raw, wild euro-beat-punk.
The group’s primal soul reveals itself to great effect on more than one occasion too, especially Bo Diddley’s ‘Said Oh Yeah’ and thunderous covers of ‘Land Of 1000 Dances’, 'Kansas City' and their quite tortuous, and great reading of ‘Long Tall Sally’, with the just-ever-so-slightly over- exuberant vocals of Roland Bauer, known to his bandmates and friends as ‘Bouboule’, which in French slang approximates to “The Fat Guy”. The Groovie folks have also dug up the last remaining sounds the band left behind in the form of a 1972 single bearing a couple of funky wah-wah, and Hammond-style workouts. While these are not so essential for garage fans, being of a much milder persuasion, they are nevertheless mildly enjoyable, and it's good to hear Roland was in fine voice a few years farther down the line, but it's really nothing when compared to the brutal rhythm & beat-punk attack the group conjured up in late 1966, and early 1967. A l’origine les Rhythm Checkers sont un groupe allemand de Beat music de Sarrelouis une ville à côté de Sarrebruck composé de trois allemands et d’un hollandais : Dave Kelly (guitare/chant),Kurth Horbach, (basse) Norbert Hohlweg (batterie), Eddy Van Nelfen (guitare rythmique). Le combo est parfois rejoint aux claviers par Frank Farian le fondateur du label Hansa. Au cours de l’année 1965 les Rhythm Checkers se produisent souvent à Strasbourg. L'année suivante, lors d’un show au Kibitz rue des tonneliers le mois de mars 1966 Dave Kelly est absent. Les Checkers recrutent alors le strasbourgeois Robby Stierheim qui a fait partie des Black and White. Quelques temps plus tard, Robby emmène ses amis voir les Skat Five avec l’extraordinaire batteur chanteur Roland « bouboule » Bauer, les allemands sont séduit et le débauchent sur le champs ! Cette nouvelle mouture des Rhythm Checkers répète en puisant dans le répertoire du british beat, du rhythm and blues noir et du rock and roll. En mai 1966, ils signent un contrat pour la saison d’été du Puce Palladium à Juan les Pins. Lieu branché de l’époque, le Palladium accueillait surtout des formations anglaises, les Rhythm Checkers remplacent d’ailleurs les Dead Sea Fruit qui connaissaient alors un petit succès avec « Loulou » . Par contrat Bouboule ne devait pas dévoiler qu’il était français. Lors de leur première prestation, ils s’imposent facilement avec "Slow down" de Larry Williams et « Don’t ha ha » de Casey Jones. Ils deviennent rapidement la nouvelle coqueluche des nuits de Juan.
Avec cette renommée, ils sont programmés en lever de rideau du Musicorama de Jerry Lee Lewis le 8 novembre 1966 à l’Olympia. Les Rhythm Checkers passent avant Vince Taylor et commencent leur set avec « Ride your Pony » de Lee Dorsey, qui semble avoir peut d’impact sur le public, Bouboule enchaîne alors avec le « I got crazy » de James Brown au menu de tous groupes beat qui se respectaient, le public de rockers commence à se réveiller et lorsque Bouboule attaque « Long Tall Sally » son titre fétiche c’est le délire dans la salle. Repéré par le boss de la Locomotive Kiki Chauvières présent à l’Olympia, ils sont engagés pour le reste du mois dans ce lieu mythique parisien. De retour à Strasbourg en décembre, ils se produisent au Kibitz et c’est la qu’ils enregistrent leur premier 45 tours avec Alain Dubois à la prise de son. Au menu;deux compositions de Roby Stierheim et du néerlandais Van Nelfen « Cause I need you » et « Theme of Rhytm Checkers »
La voix de Bouboule sonne très noire, mais techniquement un peu trop en retrait lors de la prise de son. « Cause I need you » est une vraie perle garage digne des morceaux du coffret Nuggets qui ignore honteusement les combos frenchies ! mais qui circule sur quelques compilations du genre. « Theme of Rhythm Checkers » est plus anecdotique mais néanmoins intéressant.
Les deux compositions originales figurent en face A du 45 tours, sur le recto une version époustouflante de « Said oh Yeah » de Bo Diddley digne des Pretty Things et une cover peu connu de « On your way down the drain » du combo new-yorkais des King Bee. Le Ep est pressé à environ 2000 exemplaires sur le label AGD.
Les Rhythm Checkers se produisent ensuite à la Western Farm de Brumath la nouvelle boite bas-rhinoise à la mode. Le 21 février 1967, ils retournent à Paris pour un nouveau Musicorama ou ils sont programmés en première partie d’un autre pionnier du rock Chuck Berry. Entre temps le bassiste allemand Kurt Horbach est remplacé par un autre Black and White ; le strasbourgeois Danny Gentner. Jacques Barsamian écrira dans le mensuel Rock & Folk N°6 à propos du show : « Sur la scène de l’Olympia, après les Rockers, les Rhythm Checkers, en vestes rayées, prennent le relais, très applaudis dès leur apparition. C’est une formation de rock and roll classique avec un chanteur. Bien que très fort, le chanteur remue beaucoup et rappelle par moments Screaming Lord Sutch. La salle rythme des mains « Long tall Sally » tandis que le leader s’agenouille et enlève sa veste pour interpréter à la façon de Little Richard un terrible « Kansas City ». Le public reprend ses « hey hey hey ». Suit « Land of Thousand Dances »morceau qui chauffe lorsqu’il est bien fait ! c’est le cas ici. Un quatrième titre fut exécuté « I can’t dance with you » des Small Faces ». Le regrété Jean Claude Pognant écrit dans son magazine Rock'n'roll actualité "Les Rhythm Checkers se taillèrent la part du lion ce soir là. une voix formidable et un excellent accompagnement..."
Ce grand moment du rock français est enregistré et sera publié à nouveau par les disque AGD avec la magnifique pochette rouge les montrant sur la scène de l’Olympia. Bouboule dégage une énergie incroyable, il démarre son set en criant au public "vive le rock and roll et vive les Rhythm Checkers" et enchaîne sur un sauvage "Long tall Sallyl" digne de son créateur, suit le hit de Wilson Pickett "Land of 1000 dancess" dans lequel il intercale la phrase "i don't sing for me, i sing the rock & roll for you". "Kansas City" la composition de Leiber & Stoller pour Wilbert Harrison revisitée à l'époque par les Beatles est tout aussi chaude et pour terminer le classique mods des Small Faces"I can't dance for you" termine avec beauté ce disque mythique!
Les Rhythm Checkers restent dans la capitale pour jouer dans différents clubs comme le Tchoo Tchoo à Plessis Robinson, le Poporama ou le Bus Palladium. Par la suite ils recrutent l’organiste anglais Chris Hadfield qu’ils avaient rencontré à Juan les Pins. The Rhythm Checkers Gérardmer summer 1967
Le 5 septembre 1967, les Rhythm Checkers se produisent à Strasbourg à l’occasion de la semaine anglaise avec les Artwoods et Sandie Shaw. Mais malheureusement le groupe splitte à la fin de l’année 1967. Les MEATS 1968
Robby Stierheim (guitare solo) Chris Hadfield (orgue) Roland Bauer (batterie:chant) forment alors une nouvelle formation les Meats avec les frères Dany et Max Sinclair ex Purple and the Pussycat
Cette formation qui reste fidèle au R&B et à la soul music est filmée au Lido de Nancy pour l’émission culte Bouton Rouge. Roland Bauer avec J.L Bertucelli lors du tournage de l'émission culte "Bouton Rouge sur France 2
Les Meats se produisent sur la scène du Palladuim lors des jeux olympiques de Grenoble en alternance avec le Manhattan Set, Vigon et les Lemons et les Fleurs de Pavot. En mai 1968, ils tournent en Espagne et assument la première partie de Los Bravos à Barcelone. Mais cette formation prometteuse ne durera pas et le départ pour Londres de certains musiciens mettra fin à la carrière des Meats Les CHECKERS
Après avoir été chanteur et percussionniste de l’orchestre de variétés et de jazz Urbain Tonon, Roland Bauer reforme les Rhythm Checkers avec trois musiciens des Loves au début des années 70 ;
Les membres de cette nouvelle formation sont donc Roland Bauer (batterie/chant) Dany Gentner (basse) Michaël Czeninga (guitare solo) Jimmy Bock (clavier), ils seront rejoints par la suite par BrunoEuka (guitare rythmique /percussion). En 1972, ils se rendent à Paris dans les studios Barclay avec le renfort d’Alan Weiss pour enregistrer deux chansons. Ces deux titres dans le style Pop de l’époque « C’est un rêve » et « Ouanita » ont été composés par André « Clément » Schneider et le disque est publié sous le nom de Checkers sous le label Schneider.
Les Checkers qui sont à l’affiche de différents festivals Pop se transformeront ensuite en Crucifer excellent groupe de rock progressif.
