The Rick Jensen Trio/Quartet was started in New Zealand 1999, now based in London U.K. The group is a live performance ensemble that has many members come and go throuhg the years, it has now settled on the line-up of Rick on saxes and clarinets, Paul May on drums and percussion, Peter Marsh on bass and Phil Somervell on piano and keyboards. We usually perform as a trio or quartet but do often collaborate with other musicians (including Elliott Levin, Jair-Rohm Parker Wells, Lindha Kallerdahl and John Sinclair). Since 2003 we have released 18 full length albums, with more to come in the near future. All of our music is completely improvised, making every performance and recording completely unique.
Rick has performed in many musical contexts over the years from the electro-acoustic improv of NOVA SCOTIA, the punk rock of THE SHAMBOLICS, the clarinet/dance ensemble I-C-E and the electro-noise rock of THE INSECT EXPLOSION, Rick also founded the experimental sound/art collective THE RADIOACTIVE ENSEMBLE as well as many other projects. Rick is also a photographer who has exhibited his work in New Zealand and the U.K and is showing his work at the Macondo cafes in London in September 2009. rick's first book Recollections & Ghosts is available to buy and is in a limited edition.
I'm proud to give you "Heavy In The Beats Vol. 1 - A Different Drum", the first installment in my FREE mixtape series dedicated to drums and percussion. "Volume 1" focuses on the avant garde side of the instrument, and features pieces from Billy Martin (of Medeski Martin & Wood), myself, and others!
