London quartet The Rileys have put their own contemporary slant on the longstanding DIY ethic. The band's success in independently building a devoted audience was rewarded by earning the right to do what only a few unsigned bands in history have managed, headline the Shepherds Bush Empire. The show, which was on October 28th, followed a series of recent sold-out London shows at venues including Islington Academy, Bush Hall and The Barfly.
The Rileys have seen all four of their limited edition singles to date sell out on physical formats. 'Jimmy Is A Lunatic', from their self-titled EP, was named as an XFM Uploaded Single of the Week, while other early career highlights have included 'Do You Feel Me?' crashing in at 7 on the Amazon MP3 Rock Chart where it nestled alongside new singles and classic tracks from some of the world's biggest bands, while 'Baby Blue' received nationwide airplay courtesy of the BBC.
The band have also made some major inroads towards repeating their success in the capital across the rest of the UK. This year has seen them embark on their first full headline tour, as well as their innovative Living Room trek in which they arranged a handful of intimate gigs at fans' houses armed with little more than a couple of acoustic guitars, a collection of killer songs and the promise of a great time. Their ability to adapt their live presentation for a variety of audiences has also seen them make memorable festival appearances at Guilfest, The Offset Festival and Cumbria's B Festival.
The songwriting talent behind The Rileys comes from Joseph Fielder (vocals) and Dave Giles (guitar), who met at school in Essex and have been working on music together ever since. After finishing university, Fielder and Giles moved to west London in 2007 order to make The Rileys a serious concern. The band's line-up was solidified with the accomplished musicianship of bassist James Field and drummer Martin Griffith.
Having already earned a fan base capable of filing sizeable venues, 2009 looks set to build to an exciting crescendo for The Rileys. As word of mouth and media attention continues to build around them, 2010 looks set to be the year in which they break through to the mainstream.
