The Rise & Demise are a progressive folk-indie-pop group comprising one guitarist, one cello player, one rhodes and hammond player and one drummer with two male vocals and a female vocalist. In their earlier more humble beginnings the band (forming in mid 2006) met secretly, writing and reciting their music in the privacy of a small homely cottage in the northern land of Cote. Their debut performance consisted of a weekly residency toward the end of that year at the Rob Roy on Gertrude st.
And indeed it was not long before the beauty and originality of the music propelled them to quasi-cult status in Melbourne landing them support slots for such international acts as School of Seven Bells (USA) My Latest Novel (Scotland), Fionn Reagan (Ireland), Kristen Hersh (USA), the Brunettes and Dimmer (NZ). A successful tour of New Zealand was also a highlight of 2007 playing the indie music festival Camp A LOW HUM and illustrious performances in Auckland and Wellington both resulting in standing ovations (bearing in mind seating was limited...)
The band began recording their debut album at Head Gap studios in February 2008 and after 14 painstaking months it is finally complete! Hark, the steep ascent but beware the inevitable decline!
"In the space of several months, The Rise & Demise have gone from being a promising ramshackled troupe who competently created a warm and considered atmosphere to being strong, very competent and often transfixing performers. The razor-sharp live sound certainly helps but its the controlled flickering lead guitar, quietly surging cello, skittering free form drums and sparkling organ lines that indicate they have been honing and refining their craft. A lot more prog sounding live than on record, TRAD sound forceful and assured as they surf another wave of skillfully built tension which explodes in chiming Rhodes release - songs are more pulled from the mix of sound than crafted with a guitar. You could see a fantastic soundtrack coming from them in the future."
INPRESS MAGAZINE
"Melbourne experimental indie-folk band The Rise & Demise opened the night with their evocative, sprawling and intricately textured songs. Each song felt like an epic journey and emotional tidal wave, demanding the audience’s focus with its beautifully-crafted arrangements, which were at times mystical and transcendental, other times deeply melancholic. Led by the alluringly expressive vocals of Luke Benge, the band elicited an eerie and magical aura into a charmed crowd."
