Sounds Like
The River Newts---really like nothing I've heard, a real old-time flavor and feel, . . . and appearance. Heck, everything about 'em looks old, except for Tamaura! And it won't be long for her!
The River Newts are residents of the Ohio River Valley in rural Kentuckiana, who are interested in the preservation of our historical, rural culture by making it part of our everyday lives. As a small group of seasoned, professional musicians, we are producing and composing songs of cultural, even historical, importance to the our region as well as late 19th, early 20th century period pieces, and songs encouraging the preservation of our rural and wild areas. Our name collectively is "The River Newts". Of course, a "newt" is a salamander who lives along the rivers, and like us, part of the scenery. More than that, our name serves to symbolize a culture that was born out of the rivers as our ancestor immigrants arrived on flatboats and shanties to start fresh on the banks, hills, and in the valleys. The River Newts were formed in 2004 with the purpose of re-establishing the tradition of river musicians in a contemporary group. The Newts music covers a century of classic themes and styles from traditional waltzes to modern ballads.
The members of the River Newts are as follows: Roy Gentry has a long history in folk and bluegrass music and is probably the most prolific songwriter from the Ohio River Valley. He founded the Doo Wop Shop in Louisville, KY and was a founding member of The Falls City Ramblers. Roy has also taught many workshops on songwriting, guitar styles, and banjo. Pete DuBuque is a world renown percussionist, playing the banjo. Mr. DuBuque has spent much time abroad, including years in West Africa studying African rhythms, playing with a professional drum and dance troupe from Senegal (painted black as to be authentic for the French patrons!), and running medicine to malaria epidemic villages in the Bush. Pete has been in numerous bands spanning four decades.
Tamaura DuBuque, singer/songwriter, has been performing for most of her life, as a soloist and in ensembles from prestigious collegiate Butler madrigals to rock and roll/blues cover bands. She graduated from Hanover College with a B.A. in Theatre in 1996 and has since been published as a poet and as a songwriter produced by Turley Richards and recorded in Nashville, TN.
