Introducing .. .. Rokeby Venus is a Brisbane trio who are quickly emerging into the Australian music landscape.  The outfit is made up of three young musicians: David Balfe, the bass-playing truck driver with an attitude; Matt Barnes, the jazz influenced, baby faced drummer; and Michael Danby, the surfing singer/songwriter. It’s a diverse range of personality, experience and ideas, and it’s reflected clearly in their music. .. .. .. The Journey So Far .. .. The relationship between Danby and ‘Balfe’ stretches back to high school, in which the boys formed part of a punk band. After a few years the band split, although the guys remained in touch and jammed frequently, with the idea of one day starting a new group. However reality soon pulled the two in various directions: Danby spent a couple of years travelling the globe surfing, and writing and playing music, whereas Balfe was working hard on his newly established record label. Early in 2008 the two met up and spoke about forming another group. They began working on a few tracks that Danby had written whilst overseas and started to chisel out a new style. .. The boys soon started kicking around new ideas and laying a few tunes. Their sound engineer approached a local drummer by the name of Matt Barnes to play session drums for them. After a few recordings, ‘Barnesy’ fit right in and joined the band as a permanent member. .. .. .. The Name .. .. Around this time the boys needed a name. The name Rokeby Venus is that of a seventeenth century painting by Spanish artist Diego Velazquez. The painting depicts Venus, the goddess of love, lying naked on a bed whilst her son, Cupid, holds a mirror enabling her to gaze at her beauty. Danby, Balfy and Barnesy are not high society art buyers, they simply liked the look of the painting, plus the cupid was an exact replica of a figurine that lived on top of Barnsey’s drum kit. Oh, and the name sounded cool too. .. .. .. Fresh Produce .. .. With a complete band the trio began working from a bunch of Danby’s pre-written demos, and like clockwork, the late night rehearsals, local pub gigs and parties fell into place. The music they were producing was tighter than ever, and the boys built on their already solid friendship - the new dynamic was working. During 2009 Rokeby Venus was booked in to record an EP with Aria Award nominee producer/engineer, Anthony Lycenko (Pete Murray, Xavier Rudd). After a few long weeks in a Byron Bay studio, Anthony mixed, re-mixed, and mastered his way to the completion of Rokeby Venus’ debut EP - ‘Somehow’. In addition to great music, they produced film clips for Track 1 ‘The Party Song’, and Track 2 ‘I Can Tell You This’, both clips accompanying their debut EP. .. .. .. Exposure .. .. Since these recordings, Rokeby Venus has graced the airwaves of Nova 106.9fm, Triple J, Triple M, Radar Radio, and a host of other community stations across the country. Both of their film clips got airplay on ABC Television’s ‘Rage’, and the clip for ‘I Can Tell You This’ won an award for Outstanding Promotional Potential. The award allowed the band a mentoring session with Secret Service Agency’s, Dew Process Records (Powderfinger, Sarah Blasko, Silverchair). .. They also continued to play live and were offered numerous gigs by Austereo,  including Riverfire on the Brisbane River, the Launch of Digital Radio in Brisbane’s CBD, and the Ekka (The Royal Brisbane Show), playing alongside The Beautiful Girls. Rokeby Venus also played other shows with Marshall and the Fro and Tijuana Cartel. The boys were then given a residency at Steve Hammond’s (Brisbane Business Entrepreneur) new hotel ‘ Tempo’. The momentum continued as Surfing Australia requested ‘The Party Song’ to accompany five surfing videos of numerous events from around the globe. Other tracks were also used on the live internet feed of the Breaka World Qualifying Series Burleigh Beach Pro. Due to solid feedback, Rokeby Venus was then invited to play at the prestigious 2010 Bells Beach Rip Curl Pro. Not only was it a great chance to tour their music, but also a welcome break from a fairly hectic few months. The trip was a great opportunity to settle their frantic nerves and also inspire them for the musical journey ahead. .. .. .. New Material .. .. The future is looking bright for the trio. The upcoming Rokeby Venus debut album ‘Worlds in Collision’ is due to be released in March, 2011. The album will be recorded at Byron Bay, Melbourne, and a mystery coastal location lying somewhere between the two, enabling the band to produce their most creative work to date. With producer/engineer Anthony Lycenko signed up for the ride, the album will be something special. Their first single will be made available on iTunes and other online stores in the coming months. .. .. .. Up Close and Personal .. .. Accompanying the release of the debut album will be an Australian tour with live performances coming to a town near you. Fans can expect to see an eclectic live show full of worldly modalities, catchy pop choruses and harmonies, with room for audience interaction and fun. Rokeby Venus will use their defining acoustic instrumentation and include interesting contrasts in textures and dynamics, including moments of raw acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals. Although the band started as a primarily acoustic-based outfit, the new Rokeby Venus sound on the forthcoming album ‘Album Name’ sees the band add electric guitar and other sonic textures to fatten the sound and create a more exciting atmosphere. .. .. .. The Future .. .. Rokeby Venus has come a long way. They have style, they have an image, they even have the look, but above all, they have music. Damn fine music. Music similar to warm, clean undies straight from the dryer on a cold winter’s morning. Their genre is difficult to identify. The sound can be bouncy and fun, but also slower and dramatic. Danby’s vocals lead smooth guitar and bass to a very polished and attractive sound. However the band isn’t particularly interested in genres and presume radio stations and music stores will try to pigeon hole them anyway. The band simply records the music they love to play. I know they love to surf, play instruments, and occasionally cross-dress, but that doesn’t help with a genre. Here’s an idea: put down this page, have a listen and make your own decision. .. .. ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..Party Song strikes again for the Layne Beachley Commonwealth Bank Classic! .. .. ......

'The Party Song' Film Clip .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ...... .. .. ROKEBY VENUS .. .. Rokeby Venus (Independent) .. .. ‘Party Song’ kicks off the CD and is an amazing amalgamation of some of the most disparate influences and segments from a bizarre assortment of tracks boiled down into a hippy acoustic jam. It’s like The Cat Empire or something, but also sounds like ‘Ride With Me’ by Nelly or some shit played by someone on an acoustic guitar at a bbq. Then the second song sounds like Irish folk reggae played by someone on an acoustic guitar at a bbq. Rokeby Venus are not at all earnest or pretentious which is definitely their strength, this EP is practically wearing thongs.
