* this is not the man himself but a lowly fan..............................................
................................................................................... I got to meet Ronnie
Drew in 1999 at Rory Dolan's on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, New York by absolute accident. I stopped in on my lunch break for a pint on a Friday afternoon. There are so many good pubs in that vicinity that my M.O. was to have a pint at a different bar on every lunch break and not repeat a pub for a month.
I was astounded at my good fortune when walking into Rory's I spyed a poster proclaiming Ronnie Drew's appearence that very night! To this day I've been
shocked to think he could have played within a five minute walk of my job and I could've missed him!
After returning to work and advising everyone in my address book to get their arses to Rory's in a hurry I trotted back down to the pub and who should I spy through the window of the Killeshandra Room, alone at the bar but the man himself. I humbly introduced myself and had a wee chat over a pint of Guinness. Brilliant!
I got myself in the front row and I'm ashamed annd mortified to admit that
near the end of the show (after working a double shift and consuming much too much J.P. Powers in my excitement) I passed out in my seat!
Well I hope to never miss the man again so on this page I'll attempt to compile all Ronnie Drew's upcoming shows..
I'm going to try and compile as much Ronnie
info here as I can but if anyone has anything to
add please drop me a line..
Slainte!
Dave

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

i think we are lucky to live these lives we lead. to be a part of the cultural, political and scientific conversation of our time, while able to work one's way through life basically supporting oneself through their art. amazing! frustrating sometimes? yes. unfair sometimes...what isn't? know we are blessed. that is why it is imperative that we speak up. it is our responsibility for being so blessed.
Hard to believe Ronnie is a year gone this week. We should mark the moment. Oiche mhait agus colladh samh......good night and sleep well as written in Irish on his and Deirdre's gravestone. mike h
