Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to the World of FUNK! Don't be afraid.... This fan site will gently guide you through the funky jungle and expose you to the booty shakin' sounds of Columbia, South Carolina's own The Root Doctors! Opening for acts like The Gap Band, CAMEO, KC and The Sunshine Band, Morris Day and the Time and others, The Root Doctors are one of the original party bands of the southeast! The band started gaining its nationwide notoriety after being featured on MTV in front of 14,000 hometown fans! Formed in 1987 by J. Kyle Smith and friends, the band's goal was to play as many gigs for free beer as possible. It was a dream job for the young musicians. The band grew from being a way to make pocket money to a full-time job. Quoting the last original Root Doctor, Kyle states "... we didn't care about the money, the thrill was the performance". Developing their sound and incorporating new vibes with cungas, the addition of a horn section and other experiments, these talented musicians created a niche all their own. With three regionally successful projects under their belts, the Root Doctors are still kickin' it and spreading the funk! With each disc, you can hear the growth and evolution of their music.
