R.I.P. EARL ROOT, 1962-2008
For over 20 years, Earl Root was a driving force in Minneapolis metal. As the owner of the legendary Root Cellar Records, he provided a retail outlet for a diverse array of obscure and underground metal. As a musician, he has played in numerous bands, the most notable being the Minneapolis metal band Disturbed (not to be confused with the trendy modern jump rock band of the same name, which came along much later after The Original). His record label Root Of All Evil Records has provided distribution and opportunities for many talented metal acts that put making metal before making money, because there is no money in metal! And of course, he founded and was the host of this show for the last 20 years up until May 2008. Internationally known and respected as an authority concerning all things metal, Many of the biggest names worldwide considered him a valuable friend and praise him for his selfless dedication to metal and the contributions he has made.
Earl Root succumbed to cancer on Friday, May 23, 2008.
At the time of his death, he also played guitar in the world-acclaimed symphonic metal band Aesma Daeva. Earl Root will be missed dearly...but he will never be forgotten.
We are all honored to have worked alongside Earl and are determined to see that his work is carried forward with a fresh vision to a new generation of metal fans.

THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL is the longest-running Metal radio show in the history of the WHOLE FREAKIN WORLD!
Founded and once Hosted by the Mr. Metal Himself Earl Root (R.I.P.)
This show has spent the last 23 years bringing the absolute best (and sometimes worst) underground metal to the hapless residents of the twin towns of terror (Minneapolis and St. Paul)-and now the world, via live streaming online-hosted by our mother station, KFAI 90.3 fm Minneapolis/106.7 fm St. Paul. Tune in late Saturday night/early Sunday morning from 1 am-666 am or stream it online at http://kfai.org.
THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL is quite unlike any other metal show you've ever heard before. The programming is aimed squarely at the true fans of underground metal. This is made possible by the fact that KFAI-the show’s parent station-is a community owned radio station, supported entirely by it's listeners. So while those metal radio shows on commercial stations are answering to some jackass in a suit (You need to be more accessible to mainstream markets or you're fired!) , this show answers only to the Metal Gods and you-the listener.
THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL has become a cultural (or lack thereof) institution in Minneapolis due to it’s unique, irreverent and mirthful style. In between the absolute loudest and most wicked sets of level to underground metal.
OFFICIAL LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The Root Of All Evil denies any and all claims of responsibility for whiplash, headaches, broken furniture, eviction, arrest, deportation, natural disasters, institutionalization and/or loss of I.Q. points resulting from the enjoyment of this program.

Hey Minnesota musicians! I'm a very experienced bassist w/ vocal ability looking to put together the right group of people to write, record and perform European influenced power/prog/symphonic metal with emphasis on creating a complete package of songwriting, musicianship, image and live performance.
Ideally all members would have some vocal ability, songwriting skills, a fair amount of previous live and recording experience, pro gear and financial stability enough to pursue the goal of writing, releasing and touring to support a full length CD.

I was 15 years old when I met Don Decker. I walked into Mirage and was catipivated by the walls of Cradle of Filth Shirts. Decker used to call me JAWS. Cause I had braces when I was younger and I would come into Nightfall Records and ask about bands from like Malta. Decker later once said, “Nick you scared me into getting the internet. “ Decker was always trying to stay in touch with all of the information gossip going on in underground metal back then.
I would frequently shop nightfall and by the end of high school was starting Pentagoria. Decker used to hire us guys in Pentagoria to play fests with Anal Blast in exchange for spots on shows. My first Anal Blast fest with Don was San Antonio November to Dismember 99. I was 19.
I would like to thank the hundreds of people who arrived last evening in honor of Earl Root. I am sure it was everything Earl would have wanted.. It had Tears, Song, Laughter, Story Telling and yes even Applause! An impressive gathering of people from all walks of life. The Rainbow which appeared over the location just around the end of the service was definitely a Illuminating sign that he was there.
To Earl We Love You! “We will see you later Brother” Your spirit will saturate the universe for an eternity!

My good friend Earl, You're gone, but I and all of the people you've touched in your too-short life will never forget you. Life never gets any easier, but you were truly an inspiration to all of us when you showed us how to live life to it's fullest, and to face each tough day with wit, charm and that fantastic face-splitting smile of yours. I will miss you, my friend, and I will never forget you. Peace to you forever, Earl. Love, Gene
