Sounds Like
The Royale Brothers (7-song CD, myspace.com/theroyalebrothers) The lyrics on this fun, guitar-driven goth-country band's debut read like Murder Ballads outtakes: "Stuck my pistol underneath his jaw.../Spilled that bastard's blood upon my floor." In fact, the only time vocalist Joey Royale doesn't sound like a murderous Nick Cave is when he's busy sounding like a murderous Johnny Cash. But beyond the sleeve-worn influences, there's a constant rhythmic innovation and ferociousness in the band's dueling, blues-heavy guitar lines.

It's pretty hard to describe a Royale Brothers show — but some absinthe-fueled fever-dream, in which Bo Diddley, the New York Dolls and the Misfits all cavort and caper through a Dia de los Muertos street festival, comes pretty close. The thing about bands this raw and great in performance is that they can rarely capture that sound and energy on a recording. Which is one reason this debut, seven-song disc by New London's Royale Brothers is extra great: not only do the tunes steamroll exuberantly, managing to incorporate all of the live attitude of their concerts, but the songs themselves just flat-out nestle in your brain.

Wow I was just thinking the same thing! Miss seeing you guys play and reflecting on many a good shows lately especailly since my son was born a few days after Phil's passing.
Hey guys just wanted to say "Howdy" from down in Austin. Was wonderin if the show was sphincter-tearing like Phil would have wanted it. I'm sure you guys kicked some ass.(I really just wanted to write the hyphenated word sphincter-tearing). Anyway peace and love from down South.
i would personally LOVE a string tribute to the royale bros. HINT HINT (anyone i may or may not know) i think it would make it a little easier to listen to these songs again, for me anyways. i don't know about YOU. what about you ..? do you keep a viola under your couch?
I am in complete shock! I went to high school with Phil and we were good friends and know I his mother very well... my deepest sympathy. Here's to Phil...to the many cigarettes we smoked together, the funny conversations we had and all the times you made me laugh...R.I. P

We here at New London County Myspace want to send our condolances to the band. You have lost more than one of your own - you have lost family - to that we are so sorry. We have added one of your songs to our page as a tribute. Thanks New London County Myspace
Sorry to hear about your loss guys. Phil was a joy to be around. And that cat could make merry on ANY instrument he picked up. I always got the sense that Phil was entertaining himself when he played music...and in doing so he entertained others. I know there's a hole in your hearts today. Take comfort in the idea that he touched a lot of people in his very short life. John and VERTIGO.
