Born in Toronto, Canada in 2007, THE ROYAL SOCIETY morphed from the broken homes and shattered glass of a series of hiphop and electro projects. The product of a posh ex-raver's spinaltap delusions and the pretty boy rap stars' driven ambition, THE ROYAL SOCIETY blends melodic synth pop with biting lyrics extracted from between the lines readings of Shakespearean pulp fiction.
You can find the Royals sipping champagne in the same places they were a year ago, only now it's called slumming.
A Lesson in Royal History
Established in late 2007, The Royal Society blends high energy electro-pop and biting hiphop lyricism (crowned by the occasional new wave synth riff), thus creating an inimitable signature (and monogrammed) sound.
Their story begins as three solo artists with style beyond measure and talent beyond their years each found themselves creating music in the same studio. Here and there, they captivated each other’s senses as they crossed paths coming and going until the day they decided collaboration was in order.
After the first conceptual tracks were laid out like jewels before them, the future Royals could see more than a glimmer of potential in the skeletal songs. Where synth and bass lines had previously dominated, or where a beat might have seemed the driving force, the young Royals created a previously unheard of mix of melody and flow that fell into place seeming ordained by the Gods. It was apparent to all -- something new had just been born. And it wanted a coronation ceremony.
The Royals decided then and there to create The Royal Society, giving a noble nod to The Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge. This learned society -- founded in 1660, the oldest such society still in existence – seemed aptly to designate a level of regal precedent that the Royals incorporated with luxurious ease into their material at every level.
Art direction became a passion of the Royals, and like true young monarchs they set themselves about delegating each minute detail of their palatial décor. From their public appearances to their seemingly candid photographs to creating innovative and artistic video treatments, the Royals are always sporting the full regalia with pride and purpose. The initial vision of The Royal Society had grown exponentially to push for new and larger horizons, colonizing new territories and sounds with a look and feel that was, without a doubt, majestic.
Holding court in Toronto’s underground club scene, The Royal Society’s catapult to center stage was as gracious as their ascension as media darlings. Much featured in the pages of many Toronto print publications, their envied and often flaunted aristocracy dominates the internet browsers of loyal subjects worldwide. After signing to Die Mannequin frontwoman Care Failure’s label How To Kill Music in July of 2008, The Royal Society, backed by fans and subjects armed only with the phrase “Loyal to the Royals”, prepare to rule supreme globally.
