The Rozatones blend funk soul influences of Stevie Wonder and Sly & the Family Stone with the high energy Latin jazz of Santana and rock back bone of the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Sounds Like
Grooves that'll make your hips sway and feet stomp, Leg slappin and finger snapping, make you feel like you wanna squeel.
The Rozatones, crowned rulers of Ithaca's live music scene, have you in their sights. You can resist, but usually one or two songs are all it takes to claim a new fan. 2007's Taste So Good was voted "Best funk rock album of the year" by the Ithaca Times, and 2009's Body On The Move is the breakout album the band needed. They've appeared twice on Good Morning America, opened for Soulive at Ithaca's State Theater, and played tour dates through the Knitting Factory and countless festivals - all prior to graduating college. Clearly, The Rozatones are just getting started.
It's the music. The band serves up funk and rock in the finest tradition of Jamiroquai, No Doubt and the Chili Peppers, and flavors their songs with jazz, bossa, blues, or any morsel of musical goodness that suits the song. This could be said of lots of emerging bands in America; the difference here is the musicianship and exquisite judgment the band uses. Blending genres is one thing. Blending them into danceable, sing-along-able songs that are stuck in your head for weeks at a time is The Rozatones' specialty. It's likely that the sweaty, dancing kids at the band's hometown shows have no idea how good they have it.
At centerstage is one Revi Roza, a guitar-slinging chanteuse who sings straight from the heart over her guitar's slinky funk lines. Her songs have it all: organic and sophisticated, deeply personal and relatable. Onstage, her starpower commands your attention, but the the five cats behind her are stiff competition. The band consists of Miles Crettien (bass) Sam Podell (sax), Mikey Conerty (trumpet), Adam Gold (keys), Byard Duncan (drums), and Emanuel Washington (drums). The 'Tones have a natural energy that buoys the skin-tight musical arrangements into a thrilling live experience. They don't cut corners (real horns, clav, and rhodes piano onstage see to that), they don't phone it in, and they deliver musical chops that leave you feeling good, not just impressed.
2009 is a proving-ground year for The Rozatones. With college behind them, the group is focused on national touring in support of Body On The Move, signing with a label, and gathering material for their next album. Revi and company have been ambitious since their first show in 2006, but more importantly, they've risen to every opportunity presented, and proven that they have the goods to realize the dream.
