The Rubber
Jonnies first formed in the NSW Mid North Coast country town of Grafton.
This is a town where the likes of Ex-Cold Chisel members', Jimmy Barnes &
Ian Moss still enjoy Godlike status... just as they did back in 1989... back
in the days where the local fashion was cool to be uncool, where Dr Martens boots were thought of as nothing more than 'Army Boots' & long hair was considered "faggy".
Unfazed by the taunts of these cowboy-boot-wearing, beer-belly-belching, unintentional-mullet-cut-hairdo and,
marble-wash-jean wearing locals, these inspired young punks went on to carve a unique niche in the music business and an ever growing
audience with the younger like-minded local youths of the town. They achieved this by playing
at any venue where they were able to plug an electric guitar into the wall, their garages, friends garages & also at complete strangers garages.
All members of the band attended Grafton High School together except for the
mysterious & brooding lead singer Dan Griffin who went
to the local private school for gifted and overachieving children. It was here that he started creating havoc with
'the system' as were his fellow recalcitrant bandmates accross town at their school, (a mutual
dislike of government & teachers igniting the fire in their collective punk-rock
belly. However, unknown to all of those around him, the young tortured genius,
Griffin had quiet side and began penning an unusual brand of dark poetry about the Government,
teachers, cats and general growing up feelings. It is these passionate scrawlings that in essence have become
the cryptic and classic standards that these days adorn public lavatories, park benches and the hearts of many generations of good people, right throughout the Clarence district.
The band sadly parted ways in 1989 and have only performed together once since then at,
(at The famous "It's One Year Since We Broke Up Anniversary Performance"
in a cattle feeding shed behind the toilets at the back of the Grafton City Showgrounds).
It is believed that the Rubber Jonnies legend still lives on to this day... The very distinctive Rubber Jonnies logo is now a cult icon of their little old
school in Grafton where it is carved deeper than ever into the old wooden school desks.
This, (and the continued anarchic-punk-rock tagging under the town's bridge) is a result
of the continued contribution and support of every generation of young up &
coming Grafton Punk Rock Anarchist since the The Rubber Jonnies
started it all & PUNK-ROCKED 'em all !!!
The word 'round the campfire is that the band are open to offers for a one off live reunion performance. According to Dan Griffin's publicist, "the legendary frontman has agreed to bare his trademark anger & poetry for the fans one more time..... as long as the price is right..." he later quipped.
