The RudyBoy Experiment Downtown
He's got the type of music that will soon be taking the Southwest by storm. So stated a young reporter of the Valencia County News Bulletin in a feature on Rudy Boy Jaramillo. Once you hear his jazzy funk style of swingin dirty blues - with that true rock and roll feel - its easy to see that she could very well be right.
As a successful and professional musician, Rudy Boy Jaramillo has been an inspiration and mentor to many young, budding, talented artists. Yet this fact accounts for only a fraction of the raw energy that exudes from each member of The Rudy Boy Experiment. The two exceptional and youthful musicians who are such an integral part of The Experiment’s rhythm section crossed his path years ago. Now together, the three of them form this very groove based rock / blues rock group. Known as The Rudy Boy Experiment it is quite evident he and his band ardently take the challenge of an experiment to great lengths. By definition, an experiment tests truths already known or unwittingly discovers the great unknown that lie just beyond horizons. With just one listen to The Rudy Boy Experiment it is easy to decipher that this group certainly stays true to Webster’s ideals of experimentation. With each songs’ driving, rhythm based grooves which tend to make you innately unaware of elapsed time you are compelled to fall deeper into the dense, magnetic rhythms as they successfully experiment with sound, emotion and energy.
About half of Rudy Boy’s 18 years of experience as a guitar player have found him in one success after another winning various battles of the bands and guitar contests in New Mexico in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. As well as a steady local popularity among fans and fellow musicians alike -- truly proving that persistence in one’s life passion can reap immeasurable rewards. As Rudy Boy remembers it, an eager 16 year old drummer, Ricardo Sanchez, waited for him outside a local club the day after the release of his debut album in 1999. When it became necessary to reconfigure the line up in his hardworking band, young and ambitious Ricardo was the first drummer to spring to mind. Being only 17 at the time however, certain legal issues had to be addressed. Yet, with the encouragement and support of his parents, in no time Ricardo became the steady back beat to Rudy Boy’s sizzling, percussive guitar licks. At one such performance, Brandon Berkenbile and his then band, attended. Immediately Rudy Boy was taken aback by the skill and resolve of this bass player. It is no such wonder though, since his experience as a musician is diverse and encompassing. Since the age of 16 when he began playing music with his brother on various instruments; to his days at Stanford playing bass guitar with local bands; up to his pursuit of audio engineering in northern California. Brandon definitely personifies his belief as a bass player that it is his responsibility to anchor the music. To provide this anchor and still beguilingly experiment with sound, emotion, and energy which is the trademark of The Rudy Boy Experiment takes great skill and precise discipline. Since Rudy Boy and Ricardo’s intertwined music history spans over 6 years and Ricardo and Brandon’s stretches across 2 years, when you listen to the captivating music these talented, like-minded musician’s present it becomes easy to see that there is a seemingly intuitive link pressing this unique band ever forward.
