RUINESQUE!!
Russell Barker on The Ruins 1st demo in Jan 2006
Intriguingly The Ruins CD smells of plastiscene. Now I'm not in the habit of smelling CDs, so the smell must have been pretty strong when I got it out the box. You have to hope they're not employing child labour packing the things. Still, if they are at least the kiddies are being exploited for good means. This five track EP is made up of two halves. There's the endearing jangle pop such as 'Some Weeks' and 'The Scraps' that twist and turn and wriggle to try and free themselves of some imaginary shackles. Then there are the epic almost shoegazing tunes ('City Lights', 'Hurricane', 'On Your Way') that bring to mind Ride at their best, the way the epic guitars build layer upon layer yet simultaneously sound so brittle. If you like these types of songs then go check out The Ruins, it'll be well worth the visit.
Three members of The Ruins..namely Dan, Dom and Chris hail from the mighty metropolis that is Abingdon. Abingdon has bangin nightlife, a river and more than two off licences to keep peolpe amused. The band thrive there. Andy comes from mighty Wally. Andy says its Dark.
Life started out for the Ruins when Dan and Dom started playing guitar and writing tunes together late in 2004. Chris was then invited along to play lead guitar early in 2005.
They laid down the foundations on their acoustics then started their quest for a drummer so they could do a demo and start gigging. After a bit of searching Andy joined them on drums in October 2005 and completed their current line-up as a four piece.
Song writing locations shifted from living room to garage and then finally into the yard where they still practice today. If your lucky enough to live in a 3 mile radius of the yard you might just hear them for free!
The band recorded their first demo back in Jan 2006 enabling them to get out and play at local venues. To date they have played mainly in Oxford at venues including; The Zodiac, The Wheatsheaf, The Jericho Tavern, The Exeter Hall, The Port Mahon and the The Bullingdon Arms. They have also played further afield and even managed to open up for and support The Mystery Jets and The Automatic at Nottinghams Rock City in front of about 2000 students last year!
The bands latest recording is 'Step Aside' recorded with Richard Haines at Dungeon Studios in Cumnor back in November.
The Ruins are back into the studio on the 26th &27th of January to record 'Arcade Town' then back the following weekend to record 'Confessions Of A Schitzophrenic Serial Killer'. Hopefully both tunes will be up on myspace for your listening pleasure by early Feb - keep checking back.
They are currently writing lots of new material and have nearly finished their latest... Talisman.
If you are a venue or a promoter and would like to contact The Ruins please either get in contact through their Myspace page or email them Here

Yeah the tribal drumming bit was whack! i also liked the fanfare of the common man start, the backdrop, the lights round the drums, and the dry ice. All of it really helped to make more of an occassion of an already excellent set.
Really enjoyed your set last night lads. Liking the full-on tribal drumming that you threw in there! It was good to finally get to see you. Hope you're all feeling well again soon.
to dominic: your aunt marisia sez "is that my wee babby dommy singing!!brilliant ,wheres my cd??"
