"Music, Just as in Life, Is an ever changing road." Such is the case for The Run*. The central Minnesota act, although young in its existence, has the seasoning of a group that has been playing together for quite some time. Probably because they have. Kasey DeVine, Lance Radziej, and Michael Hynes grew up together the small community of Little Falls. Known as the birthplace of legendary aviator Charles Lindbergh, the three musicians sought to create other reasons to put LF on the map. They began experimenting in middle school, but Radziej moved away the summer of 2000, delaying their aspirations only temporarily.
Radziej won numerous percussive arts awards and finished second at the Missouri state drumline competition, but quietly he longed for the the opportunity to be a part of a dedicated band. In the summers he returned to central Minnesota and they began writing as a five piece Pop Rock under the name "Tomorrows Forgotten." The band was extremely successful on a local level, gaining loyal fans and playing large Twin cities venues. But in the fall of 2006, their college choices left TF guitarists Rick Waltman and Andrew Barnes geographically separated from the rest of the group. Despite the changes, TF was able to endure for several months and still played shows on weekends. But frontman Michael Hynes grew disenchanted with a lack of new material.
Hynes began recording a solo album in his St. Cloud apartment and left the band shortly thereafter. "I was able to find the style of music that I love, and although it was difficult to leave TF, I felt like it was something I had to do. The guys could see it coming. They knew I wasn't happy with just singing anymore, and I was confident that our friendships would endure. That was the most important thing." Hynes' solo work soon caught the attention of former bandmate and St. John's student/musician Kasey DeVine. "We have always been best friends, and we have always shared a strong affinity for music." says DeVine. "So working together was pretty much a no brainer."
They began putting a set together in the summer of 2007, using keys and acoustic guitar as The Run*. And although they were happy with their overall sound, they felt that drums would tie everything together better for live shows and recording. The duo quickly turned to Radziej, who was also studying at St. John's. "Mike sent me a bunch of tracks and asked if I'd be interested. I really liked the feel and I felt like I could add a lot to the overall sound of the music."
The Run* has since added two more pieces to their lineup. Reunited Guitarist Rick Waltman and Bassist Adam Hrtanek were added after a long run of fill in musicians. Already creating a buzz statewide, big things seem to be on the horizon for this talented group. Only time will tell what they can accomplish. "We're really passionate about what we're doing, and we really enjoy it. When you put those two things together the sky is the limit." Says Hynes. "I can only hope that we'll reach it."
