In our new golden age of British pop, The Ryes make music that unashamedly has one foot in the past and the other firmly in the present. There’s a pure pop sensibility inspired by classic British bands from The Beatles and The Kinks to Blur and Pulp, plus an obvious love of classic British rock from Queen and ELO to The Police.
Throw in harmonies harking back to The Beach Boys, and some smart lyrics inspired by the masters – John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon - and you have The Ryes.
“We’re not ashamed to say we’re making pop music, and we’re not worried if that means we’re not seen as ‘cool’, declares Dan, the songwriter. “For me, that’s what great pop music has always been – instantly infectious tunes with depth in the lyrics.”
The Ryes are: Paul Canning (vocals/guitarist), Dan Williams (songwriter/keyboard), James Singer (lead guitarist), Dave Troke (Bass) and Richard Patterson (drums). They have been together for two years, notching up hundreds of gigs around the country as they hone their craft, building up a growing following of fervent fans with support slots alongside Scouting For Girls, Ben’s Brother and The Holloways whilst also playing O2 Wireless Festival in Leeds and Hyde Park.
“We’re a pop band, but we’re also a rock band. We don’t quite fit in. But when we play gigs, we get all sorts coming, from teenage girls to older indie kids. You can’t quite put your finger on who we appeal to. And that’s the way we like it.”
But don’t take Dan’s word. It’s the way that plenty of others like it too.
Ooooooooo well i really wasn't expecting you to reply! But nice to meet a band that has good music and is still down to earth. Haven't heard of you in Australia, are you guys big in the UK, or still getting there? I shall have to have a look for your album around town but i had to order SFG in so i suspect i shall have to do the same for you. Cheerio :D
Hello. I'm guessing you found me from SFG and added me in the hope that because i like their music i will like yours as well? Well it was very clever because i do like your music now and i would never have found you otherwise. Good work!! :D PS which band member is the one with longish hair? He is the cutest, not to cause any trouble amongst you boys haha
