Don't call it funk. Its not neo-anything. We're not putting on a show, or trying to be something we're not. All we do is respectfully, honestly play American soul music, and we do it damn well.
The Satellite 4 was literally born on the bricks of Beale Street, in the heart of Memphis. An organ player from Maryland met a guitar player from Idaho and a drummer from Nevada while they were all holding down the International Blues Festival in Tennessee.
A bit later, in Seattle (not quite known for its depth of soul), we found our bass man - the city's own soul evangelist, Preachin' the Blues on sunday morning radio. A few ideas are thrown out, and its clear that everyone truly gets it.
Bring everything to a rolling boil, and here we are... playing the greasy, gritty, tempermental offspring of a cold lonesome night fifty years ago somewhere in the swampland between Tenessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi... when gospel, rock'n'roll, blues, and country all found eachother and wouldn't let go.
Teaming up with the great Texas soul hero Charles van Zandt for our debut show had us out of the gate with a breakneck pace. Since then we've been writing new originals, playing in just about every kind of venue you could imagine, and collaborating with the Northwest's best vocalists.
Thanks so much for checking us out, please stay tuned, and keep the soul fire burning -
We were recently featured on a live in-studio set at KEXP with Greg Vandy. You can hear the whole set. There is also a great companion writeup on the KEXP blog. Thanks to Greg and everyone at KEXP for their enthusiasm and support!
Had a blast Shakin' The Shanty down with you guys last night! You guys got lotsa SOUL. Let's do some more shows together sometime. Keepa Rockin'! Yer Pal, Howlin' Houndog
It makes me believe in a higher power knwoing that you guys exist, and in Seattle nonetheless. Great groovy tunes. I know Seattle ain't no dancin' town, but if these standstill folk cant move their hips and their heads to your tunes, then God help us all. That good ole' soleful funky "HOT DAMN!" that a city like this needs. See you guys at Highway 99.
The guys sound great! And I know a couple of you too, one of you fixed my guitar a couple times and the other does the best show on KEXP. Would love to play together anytime.
Just stopped by for a quick listen and got hung up listening for a long time! You guys sound great, fantastic actually! All the best to you in every future musical endeavor gentlemen.
You know how this city is... people are afraid of their own shadow. Let's make this happen again soon and make up for the absence of soul that will surely be felt tonight.
Hey y'all, we're really looking forward to sharing the stage at Highway 99 on Thursday. I'm tipping my goblet of funk to you right now in fact *cheers*.
Thanks for the add. It's 7:35 PM and I've been listening to the Roadhouse Show on KEXP, featuring you guys with Charles van Zandt. You guys sound great! Good luck with all of your future musical endeavors.
