The Schomberg Fair fuse the soul and spirit of the deep blues with the frenetic energy of the birth of punk! They've been rowdying crowds since 2006 with over-the-top performances and a unique sound, alternately described as Speed-Gospel and Folk-Punk.
The band’s members are originally from a small rural farm town in Ontario called Schomberg but are based out of Toronto now. Naming the band “The Schomberg Fair” to pay homage to, and capture the spirit of Schomberg’s local annual agricultural fair; an event that any teenager in their right mind gets excited about because of it's Demolition Derby and party atmosphere.
Though most original songs lyrically are about hard times, influenced primarily by people and events Matt Bahen (Vocals/Guitar) encounters in his job as an outreach worker, they have an energy that is undeniably fun. Similarly the bands chosen cover songs are rousing versions of traditional Gospel/Folk favourites such as “John the Revelator” and “Ain’t no Grave”.
Over the past two years the three congenial rock and roll troubadours have become a mainstay in the Toronto indie-rock scene playing and filling some very reputable venues including the Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto's premiere rock venue. The band has completed several small tours all across Ontario and Quebec and has had the opportunity to play some great festivals including Canadian Music Week 2008 and North by Northeast 2008. They were also CBC Radio 3's Track of the Day on April 30, 2008.
In 2006 The Schomberg Fair released a debut EP "Pickup Full of Empties". In 2008 the band released their first full length record "Dark was the Night, Cold was the Ground" with a CD Release at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern.
We continue to perform in more towns to more and more people, and welcome everyone to come out to a show and party with us.
