The ensemble sound of the Sepia Tones is characterized by the juxtaposition of styles that each member brings to the table. The guitar lays the harmonic foundation for the melodic bass lines and catchy drum beats that are a constant throughout a Tones set. Rounding off the complex and interesting harmonies set up by the guitar and bass is a powerful, melodic, female vocal that refuses to be ignored.
The Sepia Tones have been described as "Earth, Wind, & Fire" meets "The White Stripes". They combine a wide variety of influences (from "The Smashing Pumpkins" and "Five Iron Frenzy" to "The Dave Matthews Band" and "Evanescence") to create a unique blend of rock music. All four members of the group have been performing in some way for most of their lives, and bring unique perspective to the group dynamic. In the spring of 2006, in Northern Kentucky, Eric and Rebekah started a rock-ska band called "The Flange" that gained recognition when they played at Shadowbox Cabaret at Newport on the Levee. It was in this band that they first played with Kyle, when the group's bass player invited him to sit in. When Eric and Rebekah learned that Kyle was also moving to Lexington they asked him to help put a band together. The group practiced as a trio for months, unable to find a drummer. At the beginning of 2007 they were introduced to Will by a mutual friend and the foursome immediately clicked. They began arranging songs that Rebekah and Eric had written, as well as learning a few covers. The band has been booked into a number of house parties, where they have been extremely well received. Now the Tones are ready to take the next step and begin playing shows in the Lexington area.
