The Setbacks are an explosion of rawk. With dueling guitars, gang vocals, crunching bass and pounding drums – this is one band that has paid its dues in spades for a perch atop the Canadian indie rock circuit. From the band’s ability to lead the crowds into frenzied fits of thunderous hand clapping with songs like “Born on the River” to the duelling guitar attack of "Get 'Er Up", The Setbacks have received accolades for their blistering live shows from coast to coast. This rock machine has hit the ground running, stuck it into overdrive, and kept the tank full with a steady supply of Labatt 50, blown fuses and the primal desire to rock - pure and simple.
Taking cues from such acts as the legendary MC5, The Ramones, and KISS, all the way through to Canadian contemporaries Blurtonia, Thrush Hermit and Tricky Woo, these road veterans are well versed in the customs of the Canadian music scene. Forming in 2001, the band came together with a storied career’s worth of shows under their belts individually amassed while playing in a few notable groups in the late 90s. Much like the four cylinders of a finely tuned engine, the Setbacks groove and shake with soul that reaffirms faith in the masses that the institution of rock and roll is alive and well in the Great White North. This energy is magnificently captured to tape on the band’s new EP, “One Track Mind”, which was recorded at Ottawa’s famed Little Bullhorn Studios under the tutelage of Jarret Bartlett and Dave Draves. The new record is the culmination of two years worth of playing and sharing stages with the likes of Tangiers, The Candidates, Goat Horn, Cheerleader 666, The Million Dollar Marxists, and Nice Cat. The band is prepped to hit the road again to spread the gospel of guitars and amplification at its maximum.
Surely the Setbacks don’t claim to have invented rock and roll; they're merely shaping it for their own selfish purposes. Clever songwriting and the pursuit of rock is what will keep this band going and scorching live shows is what will keep them coming back. So forget about that pregnancy test, reality TV shows or even that weird rash, remember instead these three simple syllables: the-Set-backs.
