The Setting Sons formed in February, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. They play bluegrass originals and standards, fiddle tunes, and jazz standards.
Andy Davis, the group's banjo player and main songwriter, began writing bluegrass numbers in 1994 for The Spikedrivers out of Oakland, California. He also recorded two albums playing electric banjo with the jug rock band 86 from San Francisco. He is a teacher, likes reading about brains, and lives with his wife and three kids in Narberth, PA.
Topher Horner has played bass in a number of musical acts over the years. Originally from Western PA, he lived in New England and the DC area before arriving in Philadelphia in 1988. A graduate of the University of the Arts, he plays both classical and jazz and particularly likes the music of Charlie Haden. He gets outside when he can and teaches music at Germantown Academy. He is married and has a son and daughter.
John Koutsouros comes from a family of musicians and began learning guitar from his dad when just a kid. In his twenties John bought a mandolin and began playing bluegrass. He has played with a number of bands including Lemon Hill, Smokehouse, and Birch Valley Crossing. John is also a big fan of Django Reinhardt and middle eastern music. He plays too many instruments to list and maintains a glass studio in
Philadelphia.
Dan Thut grew up in northern Indiana and first played bluegrass guitar with his aunt and cousin while in high school. He wound up in Philadelphia after living in Central America for several years. Dan has played in a number of bands including Jeremiahs Run, based out of Washington DC. He currently co-owns and operates a coffeehouse in West Philadelphia where he lives with his his wife and two little girls.
