"These United States’ intoxicating third album brilliantly captures the overwhelming jolt of simply being alive ... swings between a sleazy leer and a dreamy purr ... deftly blurring the line between carnal and cosmic."
-- SPIN (8 of 10 stars) --
"Superb ... equally at home with quiet, morose tales and galloping punky-tonk adventures ... a rambunctious alt-country band with story-songs that are both tangled and aphoristic."
-- The New York Times --
"One of indie-rock's - no, make that American rock's - best kept secrets."
-- Bruce Warren, WXPN --
"Labyrinthine and grandiose ... the 12-song cycle coils around itself in tales that rage and lull in turns. An impressive achievement ... a rousing, communal affair befitting its epic and twisted ambition."
-- Paste --
"These United States are on the cusp of it all. My Morning Jacket status. Blog darlings. Tour heros. The whole nine yards."
-- WFPK --
"It is, without being at all overly enthusiastic, one of the best records you will hear this year, and it will make you feel completely human."
-- Daytrotter --
"A beautiful collection of understated, orchestral roots rock that will enrapture both NPR and Pitchfork devotees."
-- Alternative Press --
"Mashed into the ragged, revisionist matrix of The White Stripes, Andrew Bird and even his old band Squirrel Nut Zippers, These United States possess the gift for making yesteryear's folk, rock and pop sonics skew new ... Easily one of the grooviest efforts of 2008."
-- Wired --
"TUS -- though very much a folk band -- touches upon garage-rock and pop far too easily to not overstep such comparisons. The production is spot-on and few albums in recent memory put a candle to the lyricism present here."
-- KEXP --
"A bevy of images, all delivered with the same gentle intensity ... small melodic bits pull and push the listener's attention, moving continuously under layered melodies and a wash of words."
We’re Jesse, Robby, Tom, Justin, and Colin. We’re in a band. Some people love us. Others don’t. Soon the time will come for you to choose. We play lots of shows, a couple hundred a year since we started a few years ago. It’s all we do, really. We don’t pay rent anywhere, we don’t have health insurance, 88% of our socks have holes in them, and our teeth have not been professionally cleaned in a very long time – though we all floss often, and thoroughly. You shouldn’t feel sorry for us – it’s a good life, if a hard one – you should just Buy A Compact Disc Now. Maybe even better, come SEE us now. Live. In concert. As one. With you. United. We go a lot of places. Surely one of them is near enough, yeah?
We'll for sure be at the show! You guys are awesome. Please let us know if you're ever looking for a band to open for you guys next time you're in Toronto.
Just so ya know, your boys from Lex did fuckin awesome at the ~Midwestern National Bike Polo Champeenship~ this past weekend!!! Not sure if you're into that but ya should be ; ) See on Dec. 31st!

Thanks for the kind words! I'm really stoked about the show, too. Your songs sound phenomenal - and I've already got such a soft spot for pedal steel.. À bientôt! Leif
