It all started out about a year ago, when Sam realised he could sing, and that he couldn't really play drums all that well. Brad was drafted in to provide the (AVG) beats and the seventy sevens were born.
The early days comprised of covers by the strokes, metallica, rage, muse and the foofighters. Soon the band began to write their own songs, which combined seperate tastes that range from hip hop to prog. metal right through dance and indie. The outcome is, the The Seventy Sevens.
With their first gig in November 2004 in Leeds the band have been gigging throughout Yorkshire whilst making good connections across the region and really enjoying being a part of the local music scene, playing with amazing bands such as 65daysofstatic, The Kenst, The Pigeon Detectives and our good friends Seven Acres (RIP) .
In the Summer of 2005, with the help of huddersfield music scene 'God', Stevo, The Seventy Sevens recorded a two track demo with 'The Cure' Producer Steve Whitfield and were subsequently asked to play at Clarence Park Music Festival in Wakefield.
Recently the band has been playing farther a field, in places such as York and Beverley and with increasing attention from promoters/recording companies the band wish to make a big push in 2006. New songs are been written, new exciting directions are being taken, and we are soon returning to the studio, and currently putting together a busy schedule of gigging across the country in the coming months.
Me and Bruce Banner Review, about time.
The Arctic Monkeys have shown the world that you can have a Yorkshire accent and still be successful in the fickle world of pop but the Seventy Sevens are sticking firmly to stateside vowels when they warn the listener not to "piss me off". Not a problem - I don't intend to. Sam's sombre vocals sit well with the style but he's got quite a lot of bounce to his voice that you imagine him being more of an upbeat stage performer than your typical microphone swallowing metal singer.
When first launching the mp3 machine into rocking review mode, I thought for a second that the goons at Frantic Corduroy HQ had sent me 'Bad Influence' by The B-52s - "this review won't take long" I thought, getting ready to lick a big pile of adhesive gold stars. But behold! We've got psychedelic bleeps, distorted metal guitars and warm jangley chords - "such a combination must be about as agreeable as roast beef and custard pie!" you all scream in horror. Wrong - it's a winning mix. Maybe too heavy to be hit single material but an album track that is much more than just a filler.
8/10
