What do garage rock, punk rock and girl groups from the 60's have in common? They are all influences on The Shebangs! The band formed in 2003 in an attempt to get more chicks to rock out! Tamyra Heim (bass, singer/songwriter) and Anne Tangeman (guitar, vocals) were dismayed at the relative lack of girl rock 'n' rollers in the Lawrence area, so they pooled their interests and desires and decided to form a makeshift band. They asked around and soon heard of another cool chick who wanted to rock out--Kit Cole (drums, vocals). They searched high and low for another female to join their band. Alas, they had lots of interested male musicians but no other females. Finally, they recruited another Lawrence rock veteran, Bret Dillingham (guitar, organ) to complete their group--and The Shebangs were born! The band has played numerous shows in the Lawrence/Kansas City area, including opening for national acts, such as Grant Hart, The Soviettes, and The Von Bondies. In the fall of 2004, the band recorded a 6 song e.p. simply called The Shebangs. (Two of the songs from this recording are available on this site). Unfortunately, Anne had to leave the band to pursue other interests--but the remaining 3 members carried on. The Shebangs continue to play in and around Lawrence and are preparing to record and release a new single in the upcoming months.
In addition to their duties in The Shebangs, Tamyra and Kit are also members of the acclaimed Lawrence band, Jon Harrison and The Mood Swing Set.
