Take a feisty operatically-trained chick singer/songwriter with a penchant for surf-rock rhythm guitar, an indie-pop mutli-instrumentalist on drums, a bassist with a past between Britpop and electric folk Americana laying down the grooves and a classically-trained pianist obsessed with electronics and pop music; put them in a Brooklyn loft with no climate control and give them all microphones, and watch what happens.
The Shivs' music is like Sweet Tarts. At first listen, they seem to be all glittering jangly melodic pop to make you bounce. But listen to the lyrics, and you'll find yourself crying at the discotheque. For all the pain of loss, though, there's a defiant spirit that shines through in Shiv's silvery vocals and the boys' sweet backing harmonies -- They will survive to bring more sweet tunes to lick your ears.
They've been seen in such venues as New York's C-Note, Luna Lounge, Siberia, Magnetic Field, and most recently, The Knitting Factory. Stay tuned for future appearances.
The Shivs are:
Shiv (voice and guitar), who rarely reveals who the songs are about, though her turn of phrase frequently renders the experiences she describes universal. She's also the model for Siobhan Monyihan, the lead character in DC Comics' Otherworld, written by X-Men/Wonder Woman artist Phil Jiminez.
Ben (drums & backing vocals), also the frontman in fab NYC powerpop band The Letdowns, is the band's master of dry wit and resident indie heart-throb. Additionally, he plays a mean guitar.
Mike (bass & backing vocals), also bassist for The Letdowns, stepped into the group for the Knitting Factory gig and slid into the grooves so perfectly that we all decided he should stay.
Ray (keyboards & backing vocals) likes to growl snarky things (often about the MTA) just out of range of his mic when he's not twiddling knobs, pushing buttons, and trying out new sounds.
