The Shul Band is a dynamic, mesmerizing, prayerful, delightful, sexy and stimulating ensemble of musicians! (Don't just take our word for it: check out what The New York Times had to say.)
Our home is the Lower East Side of New York City. The Shul Band is an activity of love. We came together through many years of playing as the house band for The Shul of New York, the synagogue for spiritual Judaism. We play the Shul's Shabbat services on the first and third Fridays of each month, bringing together a diverse feast of musical styles and cultural backgrounds to serve up a deliciously hypnotizing and soulful stew of beauty and fun!
A blending of old world Jewish, folk, improvisation, mariachi, jazz, jam band and classical, our wish is just to play, listen and learn from each other. Some have described us as "Jewgrass", but then again people will call you all kinds of things behind your back....
We sing and play violin, guitar, mandolin, clarinet, bass and percussion. Every one of us has a serious musical life outside The Shul Band - it's required! The Shul Band is for one thing and one thing only, and that is stirring the soul and melting hearts.
In addition to playing at The Shul of New York services, we play throughout the city, around the country and abroad. In November 2005 we made our debut in Krackow, Poland and look forward to returning soon! We are available for special occasions and parties of all kinds: no event is too large or too small for the The Shul Band. Invite us along: we promise you won't regret it!
