The band formed in late 2004 and found themselves in the studio 3
months later recording their debut album, "Unseen". Produced by Grammy
Award winner Julian Kindred (Delirious, Rebbecca St James) and
mastered at Abbey Road Studios by late/great engineer Chris Blair (The
Beatles, Radiohead), the album boasted 3 singles charting in the top 5
of Canada's CHR charts. "Aloud", the bands debut single, sat at 1 for
8 weeks consecutive just prior to the albums release in March of 2006.
Momentum was friendly to the lads, and within their first year of
touring the band had been on the road with Kutless, Downhere, Kids In
The Way, Everyday Sunday, and many other notable acts. They traveled
all across Canada, from Vancouver to Halifax, and made appearances in
the US at Soulfest and Kingdom Bound music festivals. The band was
then asked to record a cover of the Wes King classic "Motivation" for
a tribute project released internationally dubbed "Life Is Precious".
Their song was chosen as a single from that record, which boasted
artists such as Derek Webb, Phil Keaggy, and Paul Colman. They've been
featured on many compilations, including a spot on West 49's skate
video "I Am Flow", and their version of "We Three Kings" is the lead
single from the Audiophoria Recordings Christmas compilation "Out Of
The Cold". "Unseen", which is available globally through iTunes,
garnered positive reviews from radio and the press, illustrated by
remarks like "Good song...it was easy to add!!" (Scott Jackson/
Station Manager Life 100.3 Barrie) and "I love their sound and look
forward to working with them and sharing their music..." (Marc Scott/
Program Director KAOS 99.5 Peterborough). Their freshman year was
capped by receiving "New Artist of the Year" at GMA Canada's Covenant
Awards, where they were also privileged to perform. John Mays (Head of
A&R for Centricity Records) met the band at the awards ceremony and
commented that "Getting to hear The Silent play live gave me a whole
new appreciation for what they're doing. Here's another band that
Canadians can claim as their own, but whose music will stand up to any
other bands, anywhere".
Over the last few years the band has continued to tour, sharing the
stage with artists like Jeremy Camp and The Myriad, in the ongoing
process of musical maturation. The Silent's sound has always swayed
from ethereal to bone-crushing, and they've striven to write music
that lives in the space between the two. With their latest release,
"Americanized", they're one step closer. The EP (out March, 2009)
features tracks recorded in their hometown of Moncton, New Brunswick,
by friend and engineer Jeff Somers (www.jeffsomersband.com) and mixed
in sunny San Francisco at One Way Studios. This release will delves
into new territory for the band lyrically. "We still don't consider
ourselves artistic dictators," says vocalist Marc Jolicoeur. "We
present more questions than answers. But...I feel we're a little more
confident in our choice of questions this time around."
The band (Jolicoeur, Dennis Prescott on guitars, and Justin Macrae on
drums) will be touring in promotion of "Americanized" throughout the
summer and fall, all the while writing and recording material for
their next release. Essentially: The Silent are working hard to be
anything but.
