The debut Single Malt Special 7" is coming soon!
Hold onto you hats ladys and gents... Brand new vinyl from Melbourne's most hirsute & heavy collective! Out soon through Perpetual Motion.
The Single Malt Special are a five piece original Funk and Soul band from Melbourne formed in early 2007 by a collection of some of the city’s most in-demand and productive musicians. The band’s sound, although predominately influenced by old Stax Soul and Funk, and 60’s spy film Rock & Roll, also incorporates elements of more contemporary styles such as Neo-Soul and Hip Hop. The Single Malt Special are true to an age of music where character, fun & enthusiasm are equally as important as musical competency.
Inspired by acts such as The Bar-Kays, Rufus Thomas, Ann Sexton, and The Meters, The Single Malt Special deliver original Funk and Soul full of the same energy, intuition and loose, deep grooves & rhythms that made their idols some of the most exciting acts through the 60’s and 70’s. Toe tapping, crowd participation and the odd jitterbug is very much the order of the day at any given show.
The band has worked with a collection of the country's finest musicians and vocalists, recently recording the new theme song for Vince Peachs' PBS flagship show 'Soultime'. The track features lead vocals from Melbourne's own budding soul superstar Ella Thompson and backing vocals from Australian icon Vika Bull. With accompanment from members of The Cat Empire, Blue King Brown and The Bamboos, The Single Malt Specials 'Soultime' is a track destined to grace our airways for many years to come.
Currently the band is taking time out from their usual busy live schedule to work on material for their forthcoming debut release.
Stay tuned for the debut recording by The Single Malt Special, to be released on 7" vinyl through Perpetual Motions Production very soon!
